My previous iMac G5 wasn't turned off (apart from software updates, which was just a re-start) for 5 years, without a single problem. And only then because we moved......

Update - turns out that when Hubby accidentely knocked the printer wire going into the front usb port the port broke causing a short.
There are a few other little problems anyhow, so what is happening now is that we will use the pc from Howard's late daughter, that is a bit newer and has two hard drives in it, replace one of them with my hard drive from my present pc, so all the files are there, use the removed hardrive as a back up external one (it well get a nice new case of its own), and I have Windows 7 installed as well. That sounds ok, doesn't it? Phew ...
