no smell, just turned itself off... trying to turn it back on nothing at all happened, sigh... local pc doctor siad he'll look at it again eitgher today or tomorrow, maybe the power supply box he put in was faulty .. he'll check what else it could be...

it could have been a duff PSU or not powerful enough. worst case though it could be the motherboard has been fried. this can be replaced and again without loss of your data. have you looked further into a back-up strategy?

Yes Paul, there is another 'empty' pc in the house with two hard drives, and we're thinking of me using that so I have another hard drive to back things up on.. to be honest I wanted to wait with all that until after Christmas, I just don't have time now with commissions to finish to start a major pc faff, re-uploading all my programs etc... not knowing my way round the inner workings of a pc too well I don't quite get the benefit of two hard drives within the same pc, but that's probably just not understanding it all properly...

Gisela, i'm sure there are others also on this forum who can talk you through how to install a 2nd hard drive. tbo it'll be a lot easier if your dead PC comes back working to put the extra drive in it. no need to then install progs, drivers, data etc on the other one. but like you said it's not top of list of things to do at the mo, if you need some PC advice you know where i am.

I have a three strike rule with computers, once three things break on 'em I get another. Had my old faithful for years and really should bin it. And I have toshiba laptops and they're like tanks. Cables break before the laptops do and even those last years.

I'm sitting at one now that has an external fan base that it has to sit on else it overheats. Also the DVD drive tray has to be half out to allow in cool air. And I have an external keyboard sitting on top of the actual laptop keyboard as the proper keyboard doesn't work.

My old faithful in the office has its side permanently off (quite dangerous to be fair but only I go in there) when the computer is perminently on. And that too is because it has cooling problems.

Power packs and fans I go through. lol Oh and keyboards and mice.
