this kind of topic saddens me,
we can only assume that the work being done by these £5m2 tilers is substandard.
it has to be a decent bag of addy is £20 trade,
a decent grout is £10 for 5kg,
petrol, insurance, public liabililty, INCOME TAX,
it just cant be done imo.
but if they are doing it, it wont last (thier work or the offer!)

sorry to all you guys being kicked in the nads by these people!

I've said it, and I will say it again, ANY tradesman at this time will DO anything to put food on the table and pay the rent. It doesn't matter how good a tiler you are, those old prices are dying IMO. I'm being out-quoted all the time here in SW London.

I called a client to see why I didn't get the job, 20m2 travertine hallway, I quoted #30 m2 plus mats, he got another local tiler, who is good, at #25 m2 all in!

I also think that the cheap tile sales on the net is not helping. IE, did a quote last night, 22 m2 ceramic, a lovely house in Surrey, ex-RAF pilot. Did my quote, #25 m2, oh, he said, I got the tiles off the net for #8.00 m2, thought it could be done for 200 notes...............:mad2:

i am in sw london and i will admit that prices have taken a bit of a dip generally,
however, if you have regular customers and trusted patenerships due to the quality of your work, it will only mean 20 here 20 there!
but if you are a stater upper, you are going to be bottom dollar to get the work, in the end the skilled fixers are going to be back correcting bad workmanship, and as these forums point out, bad workmanship can be anything from tile lippage to DAMP ROOMS.
stick to your guns, charge a fair rate, do the work properly even if it costs you a few quid, then the reccomendations come and so does the constant work and MONEY!

imo.
