outside opinions please

personally i'd be putting this in writing to them at this point.

Most small works between tradesmen and customers are based on trust both ways, which is fine and the way I prefer it but as soon as that trust is gone you are on dodgy ground. So get it all in writing now so if the worst happens you have been seen as the first person to have tried to find a solution. Personally I'd state I would be happy to carry on the works but the constant changes are delaying things and once items are ordered especially custom made ones such as the window are non-returnable and chargeable. Say any further changes to the design are fine but will also incure costs either by extra works or down time chargable a x amount per day. I'd draw up a weekly payment schedule too if this is going on for a while so they can never get too much in debt to you.

i would remove what you can and only agree to finish when paid in full as they cant be trusted

just an update for everyone who helped me with advice,i returned today to re sheet the room to new design as agreed and was expecting 1k in labour money as agreed, also armed with a detailed new quote for us all to read and sign, customer turned up again and claimed i would get the money tommorow.
i declined this and said you can eithe rpay me cash now as agreed or im leaving,he checked new quote price signed it and got me my money 10 minutes later.

all is well at present

I wish I hadn't read this, it only re-enforces my current belief that the majority of customers are liars, and want something for nothing, and will try and rip us off given half a chance. Glad you stuck to your guns Jamie, but I have this dreadful feeling, they will try a pull some stunt down the line.

I dont think you should trust these people although it seems they started doing what was agreed when you threatened to walk off job.
i would walk away now if you have other work to do and soon enough they will realise what a mistake they made.
if it is not financially viable to leave i would insist on short stage payments which might only leave you out of pocket by say £ 800.00 at any time if client doesnt meet payment on time

update on this fiasco guys n girls, i returned after my last visit which was re r oughing the room to collect the 1st shower they had chosen which was to go back and be refunded...the job had stopped at this point waiting on a window
went in house to be advised that they wanted to change the shower yet again and also someone else had told them it was in the wrong place!

took the 1st shower away and said i would send my plumber out to re change the pipework for what they wanted only to be told they will get there own plumbr?

anyways took shower back and awaited call once window was in.

got a call from female client one morning to ask if they could have key back as they needed it....ok no problem i agreed to meet her and also i asked about the window....1st story was that it hadnt been delivered then 2 minutes later claims that it did come and it was too big so was sent back..ok i said call me once it re appears and ill re schedule you in...end of conversation

an hour later i get an aggresive call from the ladys friend i beleive...fing and blinding about what a bad job i had done etc etc etc ...bear in mind i have only stripped out and roughed it it hasnt even been prepped yet

i advised her i wouldnt deal with a 3rd party
i called my client and a polite text also asking to call to discuss concerns

nothing for a week
then a call from him saying his solicitor would be in touch as he wasnt happy i asked what he wasnt happy about but wouldnt comment

solicitor latter came claiming they have no faith in me to do a good job and also wanted all receipts for everything supplied and any indescrapancies in what i charged tham and receipt of rawematerials they were demanding back
