Have you quoted a job and customer offered to pay you with goods other than cash or cheque? (Not talking about hanky panky) Well i got talking to a friend tonight who is a land agent and he was telling me about some hassle he is having with a client. He did a large job for them and as part payment they gave him a big marble table which they said would be worth around a £1,000. So he took it home to his wife who hated it, so he put into an auction in london and it sold for £250,000 :yikes: It turned out to be quite rare. Now his clients are trying to take him to court to get the money. Now the gave it tohim as they were skint as part payment for work he did....So what would you do!!!

As above, they gave it away. Very brave to accept it. Tough tooty if its worth more than they expected. How did they find out anyway?

Had a customer offer me one of her paintings for doing a couple of en-suites at her Hall. Told her that Tesco don't accept them as payment for groceries anymore. She looked blankly at me and said, you can have any one you like. She is an artist and I looked her up on tinternet. A load of rubbish really, good website but my wife would have gelded me.

Now the rococo table in the hall would have been a different matter....

They gave it in payment and accepted in good faith so not sure your mate has to do anything but it's the moral dilemma. If you mate can live with that then fine but i'm not sure I could knowing the only reason they offered it was because they were skint.

Don't know because i've never been in that situation but I think i'd 50/50 it, how long after accepting it did they put it in auction?

Sotheby's most likely ... the table wasn't a loan, it was the payment of choice. Morally, not sure what I would do ... maybe give him the £1000 back, too, it sounds a reasonable but not a happy solution, 50/50 sounds joy all round and maybe the nicest thing to do... that customer must be kicking himself... In the end I think it depends how I'd have gotten on with the customer, if I liked them or not.

So let me get this clear in my mind....

He takes the table as part payment, he puts it to auction and comes away £250k up.
Why on earth did he tell the client that:

a) he put it to auction
b) how much he got for it

If he had kept his gob shut then he wouldn't be having this aggro??

Personally, I'd pay off the mortgage, keep a bit for new toys and if there was anything left I may well offset it against the rest of the clients bill.

They don't have a leg to stand on. He couldn't have possibly stolen it therefore surely they must have given it to him (looking at the situation from outside of it). I'd perhaps give them 50k or something as a gesture of good will. But if they used it to sue me, you'd end up spending 100k to keep what's left. Could get nasty. It'd just keep it to save the hassle lol.
