Have dry lined with dot and dab onto sound concrete blocks before, but this job has no insulation unless I batten out. As the room is quite small I don't mind the small amount of packing out necessary. It is a small price to pay to gain the extra insulation.

Regards dot and dabbing backer board. I use a technique that involves using 2x1 battens, setting them in line and vertical then foaming behind.

I don't have an issue with dot and dabbing backer board, it's just that this works for me
