i have never tock money up front (only if suppied tiles, then not always)
have been offered , but you end up rushin to get away.

i hate getting money early, as you feel your getting nothing when you finish. i always make the best job i can, a mate of mine got a load of quotes and the cheapest was a polish firm, cost him more in the end with all the problems to sort

Its not only Polacks and other imigrants that it seems can do a bad job theres that distant breed called mateofamate. Went to quote for a kitchen (walls) and when I arrived I noticed the floor was not quite right. What do you think of that the guy says " it looks ok when wet but crap when dry". Seems the mateofamate laid around 4 Sq metres of slate in around 5 hours on an uneven floor and I mean uneven supposidly used self levelling compound, cut up to the plinths instead of going under, had badly lipped tiles, some of them the thickness of the tile and had not used impregnator so the grout was imbedded in the surface. :joker:

The bit I don't understand is he paid him £200 when he knew it was not right.

Who am I to critisise I got the walls.

I got a mate and his wife, (English born Asians, India)
Anyway, he has his house extended up & down at the back of his house, cost 30k.
The guys who did the job are all extended family of his wife. New extended kitchen downstairs and new bathroom and bedroom upstairs. Now I am not a builder but I could see the whole thing was botched, floors uneven, kitchen door to garden visibly wonky, and the bathroom tiles floor and walls full of nitty bitty cuts everywhere. Electric sockets knocking out the mcb's constantly and this was his so called family.
Happens in all walks!!!

ps ... I hear lots of people down here in the south call almost all eastern europeans Poles.

I'd say the verbal contract was for tiling only, and now the job has grown 50% in size, so will the bill, and the time it's going to take to finish the work.

Get the work done, give him the bill, if he refuses to pay for all of it..... well lets say there are many different ways to get someone to change their mind over not paying you for no real reason.

Good luck

Hi Howard, I'd walk or as gaz advises, I know you are owed money but at this rate your going to be owed a lot more and he will be on your case thruout, It's a life experiance and he won't find it easy to get someone else in to repair other people's work. Believe me your not the first and you won't be the last to work for this kind of idiot.

One of the main reasons that I have with going full time tiling is the area I live in which is 11% Asian. I have not got a problem with Asians in the usual dealings with them where it is the other way round such as shop owners, taxi drivers and so on, in fact the local curry shop we are on first name terms. It comes as no surprise though from Howards post that he has had problems with them trying to push the price down either during the work or on completion.
I recently went to quote a kitchen wall. Turned up at the address given and the door was opened by an Asian guy in his later years. After some initial confusion as to why I was there I was told that his son who had arranged the quote was not there and was invited to wait for him to return. Inside I was told the work was not at that address. After 10 uncomfortable silent minutes I decided to leave, with the opinion if he could not be there at the arranged time what would it be like getting payment. I don't want to be a steriotype but it is not the first time I have heard of them wanting something for nothing and it makes me wonder how to handle it should I be asked to quote in the future. :huh2:
