Had the same problem just before x-mas as Tom. turned up at the house and the area to be tiled was about 37m2. Mixed floors and walls. Told me he had atiler in early who quoted £400 with mats included. Just laughed and said i would go with him as mats alone would be about £200-£250. He asked me still to quote so i said £650 and that was me knocking about £100 off the price for him.figured about a weeks work. Still tried to get me down in price but i wouldn't have it. Said he'd go with me. Started me thinking mmm £400 to £900 am i going to get paid. He wasn't living in the house so had no idea where he stayed. Then phoned me up to tell me Terracota tiles in kitchen with ufh. Told him that would be another £250 on the price and he agreed to easily. Decided not to do it as had a feeling i was going to get bumped. Maybe i was wrong but had that gut feeling.

As long as you have other work to do I don't blame you for walking. The question is what do you do if the customer is unwilling to give you what you quoted on completion, is it worth taking a hammer to your work so they have to shell out for tiles again as well as someone to fix. Be interested to know what people have done if they have been refused payment.
Maybe Dan should set up an anominous forum!

I once went to a job where they wanted 4 rooms and a stairwell plastering. As I was doing this around my regular job I expected it to take 2-3 weeks and I didnt want to wait that long for my lolly so I asked if I could get paid after each room. they agreed and thats what they did. even gave me a £20 tip at the end.
So if the customer looks a bit dogey you could try that one on them, that way at least the worst that can happen is you wont get paid for the last days work

By anominous I meant totally anominous that way if somebody as an example did walk of the job with " whatever " then came back the next night with some brake fluid to their new Discovery there could be no repecussions. Bit extreme that like
but as I said just an example. We could vote on the best one.

That leads me to a story- Someone I knew was driving home when they were cut up by a ford escort RS 2000 on a country lane. It pushed them into a ditch wrecking the suspension. Anyway guy gets the number plate and has a friend in the police. So he tells the guy what has happened and asks if he can get an address of the plate. Guy says he can but obviously it aint allowed so nobody must know how he got the address and to leave it with him.
Anyway a couple of weeks later he decides to go home another way and low and behold parked outside this house is the very same RS that cut him up so he goes home and later that night goes back with some brake fluid and totally trashes the car under the cover of darkness.
A couple of nights later his mate in the poice turns up with an address but tells him that the car was sold on about a week ago.

Ooops.

Tom, the owner could sue the person for damage's in civil court and the police could prosecute for causing criminal damage. If the cost of the damage exceeds £2000 the magistrate can insist that the case is heard in the crown court, penalty for criminal damage is 10 years imprisoment. If less than £2000 in the magistrates court 3 months and £1000 fine and also ordered to pay compensation to the owner. It may have changed over the years and Maybe not.

Tom, there are many ways to skin a cat, you can get payment in other ways, maybe down on cash but satisfaction is almost guaranteed....

Mark that is just the point of the posts. Somebody on the forum must have been faced with that situation where the client refuses to pay what has been agreed to. So what did they do in that situation.
Fair point Whitebeam so maybe you should gentley prise of your tiles and leave in the corner with some wet adi for some other willing fixer to replace. That way all you are surely doing is undoing the work you have not been paid for. I know it would be time consuming but the satisfaction would far outweigh the feeling of being made a mug off.

Totaly agree tom, I think grumpy has said before put in writing but at the end of the day you are on your own. The small claim's court dos'nt mean your going to win and you could even lose, With my 6' 1" and 16 stone frame I've wanted to pick em up and throw em down the stair's head first
