Porcelain Floor Tiles 300x300

I just charged £730 for 10sqm of 600x150 ceramic planks inc' materials. Concrete orangery floor.
Does that make me a bad man?! (day and a half, could have squeezed into one but I don't rush)

(Nice text afterwards saying they were really pleased too)
Bad to the bone!!! £100 mats on that so you made £630!! Damn son , if you can get that then nicely done, don't think I would have got to £630 with mats myself!

£60 odd per m2! and needing nothing bigger than a 700 cutter. In lancashire? Bad boy!

How did you come to that figure?

If you also knew what i charged to supply and install the ufh you'd really not like me. Basically, I get all of my work through referral and recommendation so if i think i can charge a decent rate then i do. I deliver what i promise, they're happy and i get paid. If we all charged more and delivered what we should, we'd all be better off. Where it goes wrong is when decent tilers are having to compete with idiots.

I agree, there is always some one willing to do the job on the cheap and that's always tempting for customers but I wouldnt over charge like that unless I didn't want the job. Were they apparently wealthy? Working for builders and other outfits are what drives prices down

Why is it over-charging? Serious question, I'm not meaning to be flippant!

(I did want the job but I also have the luxury of not having to worry about where my next job is coming from)

I think I'm with localtiler on this and it is way over the odds for location and materials used. Don't get me wrong, if the customer is happy then all is good, but over £60 a m2 for run of the mill tiles is ott.
I'm all for making a good living and did £630 on Monday, but I feel like I earned that I wouldn't taking £600+ from a 10m2 floor.

Ok, fair comment. But why is it too much?
I can pay 90p for a cup of run of the mill coffee from a Spar vending machine, or £4 for a run of the mill coffee from Starbucks.
What's the difference?

I just think it's a really high price for what sounds like a basic job. If some one came to your house to wire some lights in or something and quotes you £500 and they did it in a day and only used a few wires, you'd be pissed.

If it was an elderly female customer would you have charged the same and slept well that night?

Not necessarily. If i had bad experiences of other sparkies and if this one came on time, did the work cleanly, efficiently, safely and with respect for my home I'd be pretty pleased with a good job, done well.
Price is subjective and not always relative.
Goods and services are only worth what someone is prepared to pay.
All my quotes are clear and upfront. I never whack things on at the end.

Look at it another way: If there are people like me "over-charging", shouldn't it make it easier for others to win business by under-cutting?

Ok I'll come clean (bit of trolling) it was £530 inc' materials and I'm not VAT reg'd.
Took a day and a half making sure it was a minty finish.

I'm still all for charging as much as possible though. I think it's wrong and counter-productuve that we feel pressured sometimes to drop our prices whilst customer's expectations rise.

Just lost a large portion of respect for you after bull ********.

Aww come on! No harm meant. I just want to understand people's reasoning behind pricing.
We're hard-wired to be suspicious or hostile to anyone "different".
I do charge more than most, but I don't think that you can over-price a job.
You can over-charge, sure. I came in for criticism from a customer a few years ago for finishing too fast - like you said - he thought I was taking the mick.
He was happy with the end result though. Lewis Hamilton doesn't get penalised for coming in first!

I agree with you impish. If someone's prepared to pay it, you do a cracking job that they are over the moon with then everyone's a winner. They may just think 'that's a bit steep' and get someone cheaper (good for the cheaper bloke as he gets the work) can't see a problem - we should feel more guilty if we were driving prices down for everyone. This year I decided to up my bathroom refits by 25% as I realised I was selling myself short with the effort I put in and the quality of work I turn out. I've got a feeling I should be upping it again and may do that before the year's out. Not going to feel guilty about it - customer either wants me or doesn't.

Spot on, my prices went up again as I was on a 6 month waiting list, if they want me they will pay for me.
I'm still at a 3/4month wait & employed another tiler to go do the jobs that I price up slightly cheaper than myself doing them.
Took me years to build up the reputation I have for tiling & customers know that they pay extra for a top quality install that they just won't get in my area..

Agreed, good work should pay well. I'm normally the highest quote if customers bother to get others and I still win most jobs I quote for. I don't advertise or have a website and could double\ treble book myself most months.
I just though impish's trolling price was a tad ott.

Sorry! 🙁
I won't BS again 🙄

nobody forces anyone into doing the job. its up to customers to get prices and take it from there, you are also in business to make money,
