have you got a garage ?

fasten some plaster board to the side and off you go.
Achitrave down one edge and in the middle form a window to cut around.
Maybe use ply or chipboard as you will be able to clean it off better.

What about building some sort of small wall in your large shed from concrete blocks? Good experience for plastering, and if your wall/plastering is bumpy, it'll be a good experience for real world tiling.

If you use plywood and then cover it with a cheap grease the adhesive will stick but then be easy to remove afterwards, it's what BAL used to do in their training centre. (Not sure if they still do)

thinking outside the box a bit and not at all sure if it would work but so you get more than one go with the wall without having to replace the board would it be useful to put wallpaper on it first to make stripping the practice tiles off reasonably easily..?

Wall paper does work but the grease is easier, you can just apply it with a grout float and it only takes seconds. Also with the grease you can pull off the tiles and re postion them with the wall paper it sometimes comes off when you pull a tile off.
