most of them tell you to prime anything even if you dont need to they can sell more. Some times you need to prime plaster board some times its best not to.

Quick splash with SBR won't do any harm.

I agree about it being a bit of a sales pitch, but can you expand on which times you need to prime, and which times it's best not to!?!
