i am going to face it off with 6 mm hardiebacker to make sure i get the best start i can , as for the Silicon joint between bottom row of tiles and worktop surface , what sort of size joint is good to go for ? , i suspect i will be using mapei ultra color with matching Silicon 🙂

On a worktop just turn your spacers on the side (laying flat on the work top) and rest the tile edge on top, this normally gives you about 2.5mm

You could just take that old sill out mate.

Then cut a new sill with projecting horns on either side of the window and have the cill made with an over hang of say an inch or so. This would allow you to tile up to the underside of the sill.

I have attached a pic of some work I done recenty where I put in a new sill with an overhang and horns at the sides of the reveal.

not the best pic (this pick was taken of the floor) but it gives you an idea of what I mean as you can see the cill

Take your time, check 3-4 times if you have to, make sure all the walls are flat and straight and get a good even bed on and you wont fail mate.
