Should rustic black slate calibrated look like this? Help?

The tiler has been laying rustic black slate modular from Topps Tiles. We are really disappointed with the way it is laid as there are numerous trip hazards with some tiles significantly lower than others and sharp corners sticking up. The tiler has blamed the tiles and said that's what they look like.

Is this right?

As a matter of interest, how many m2 is it and how long did it take him ?

30 m2 and started monday of last week but had to rip other tiles up so starting laying wednesday and finished yesterday. It's a insurance company contractor following repairs to the house.

Welcome to TF. With some slate you wont get 100% lip free,but that floor is terrible.

You need to speak to your insurance company. Also, I don't think that is calibrated slate, it looks to be uncalibrated, which should have been graded into different thicknesses before laying.

No, they didn't - part of insurance work after underpinning in the kitchen, so didn't get a choice of tiler

I would explain to the insurance company that they may have lots more claims due to tripping !

That is a terrible installation done by someone who hasn't got a clue as to how to fix un-calibrated stone.

At the beggining of a natural stone/slate job I usually sort all the tiles into thickness piles. Start with the thickest tile and work down thicknesses, this way you can get a level floor. The thinner tiles can use a bit more adhesive but you should end up with a level floor.

Looks like the tiler has just thrown them down with a normal bed of adhesive.

unacceptable mate i am quite new to tiling and i know it should not be like that he has just laid them as they come out of the boxes he should of took them all out and graded them before laying

did the tiler put a self leveling compound over the floor, once they took the old tiles up?

you say you had no say in who the tiler was, did you get a mandate from the insurence where you had to chose the tiles from topps and use a topps recommend fitter, ive come across this in the past.

by the way the floors shocking!!!!

Had this trouble last year with these tiles from Topps...said Calibrated on the boxes, took them back they said it was a misprint on the boxes. The ones i got were rubbish, ranging from 3mm to 25mm.

thats a discrace. pic 4 must be 6-7 mm lip. no matter if he knew how to fix them or not he should of spotted it after a few tiles and took the time to re think the situation. if the tiles were that bad he should have spotted it and stoped before it ended up like this.

No, we were told to choose them we could choose from a couple of companies and Topps was one of the but the company who are doing all of the insurnace work had different trades coming in and one was their tiler so we had no choice over Tiler. I'm not blaming Topps in any way. The tiler laid something on the floor that meant the floor was perfectly smooth after the old tiles were picked up. We're not sure what to do now as we have registered a complaint with the insurance company as the contractors are blaming the tiles - they suggested we have something else when we chose these and said we were effectively told "we told you so" when we complained.

It's a 10mm lip. 5mm and upwards on quite a few. My 3yr old has tripped a couple of times. It's so frustrating as we thought we were nearly finished with the upheaval.

this is the problem when every tom dick and harry thinks tiling is easy, a tiler that is used to fitting natural stone would of made a better job, even if the tiles were bad quality, if they thought they were that bad, and unable to produce an exceptable standered then they should never of laid them, and i.m.o a 10mm lip is not exceptable..

i agree with everyone on here,that is terrible,i laid a 40 odd m2 topps tile 'calibrated:lol:' floor the same as these before Christmas and finished it just after.you can not get away from lippage with these tiles,there was some terrible tiles,all shapes all thickness,but that floor is disgusting

That floor is absolutely outrageous. Whoever is responsible for laying that should have his hands cut off so that he can never do such disgraceful work ever again.

You have my deepest sympathies for having to go through all this upheaval and hassle just to get a simple kitchen floor tiled. Insurance company MUST insist on it being ripped out and done properly.
