OMG! Ain't seen that done for ages!
That's how we used to cut the handmade Mexican floor tiles in the eighties when I worked for a company that only followed Smallbone kitchens around doing their floors. We used to shape around obstacles or corners with just a pin hammer. That brings back memories.

Phil I am talking about most of the limestones I fix , not tiles or quarries or geometric tiles.
sure I can cut some stones with your method but when I am required to cut very accurately with a very clean line I might need to clean edge up with a grinder or file.
Depends what stone you are trying to cut as to whether this is possible with a pin hammer and tungsten tipped chisel and how accurate you need to be and what shape of cut as well I think.

I agree John, some stone is unpredictable. But on quarries/ dust pressed tiles and loads more, this is very accurate.

As an apprentice, the master would often give you a tricky cut to do and tell you "do that, bring it to me if I can tell from the top edge which side has been cut, you will be doing that same cut for five years" I soon learned to get the hang of it.

Yep Mark, pin hammer can cut most tiles in the right hands.

Oh wow haha you know Jonny, for the life of me I can't remember. But what I do remember is the company was made up with the most eclectic group of people u ever met, including a Black Cabbie who spent half his time tiling, the other half Cabbing! Haha it was a cushy number, met at office everyday at 8am, coffee, chat and then make our way to the job. Having a cabbie around was great, never got lost! Haha no Sat Nav then! The office was close to Brick Lane Market.
Anyway, we'd make our way and ALWAYS stopped for breakfast on the way. The only group of guys I have known that always gave directions via Cafés and not pubs! Haha god that was a lifetime ago. As to what the tiles were called, errrrrr dunno sorry. I was quite new to the industry then. Only been full time for about 4-5 yrs. but I think it was pre 85 cos that's about the time I went out Algeria to work laying a never ending supply of marble tiles and then I got lumbered with looking after 30 local Algerian Tilers! And I use the word Tilers VERY LOOSELY INDEED! Haha

haha well how small is this world?
The Mexican tiles were about 300mm2 and all sorts of shapes, we used to make our own seal back then, no Stain Stop! Haha They were also very bowed, bit like upside down dishes. Had to have about 10mm joints and had to be meticulously cleaned with scotch pads before sealing or hand and footprints became visible.
And Algeria? What a Mare!!!! Horrid job, no fun at all. I'm sure I could smell the airport from the M4 on way to terminal 2! Haha
we were originally working for a company called Baxter Fell International which was quickly in trouble, they were only shop fitters after all! But we're forced into it by the Governments of both Algeria and the UK. Anyway was taken over by Tarmac International and it was rapidly downhill from there!
Dont sound half as much fun as ur experience, conned or not! Haha

John you can cut most stone or tile with a pin hammer and tungsten tipped chisel. It was the only way before machines, I hope to demonstrate this dying skill on the geo course.

yes the good old days again, pin hammer / toffee hammer back edging tiles tapping them from behind. Still use it and dont forget the old cutting board and screiber

There four of us hitching over the top of Africa.only foreigners we met in Algeria was the london philharmonic orchestra and they were actually pleased to talk to us!!! Have vivid memories of being ambushed by a bunch of club wielding local nutters in a wood somewhere long way south before desert who were going to do us over for our whiskey.we were only saved by the fire we made using breeze blocks for shelter from wind. They exploded like bomb just as we were being surrounded and they thought they were under attack thank god.saved our skins.
