Having done quite alot of tiling I took the plunge and went on a course. Now I know that although it doesn't teach you everything (in my view it's like a driving licence, you pass then learn when on the road!), but I decided to take the plunge and am just about to go it alone.

There's loads of cowboys out there and I do a good job, so I know I can make a go of things and churn out high-end work.

I've used Rubi TS Manual Cutters but my opinion is that they are limited - I don't like where the breaker is, breaks too many tiles for my liking. Now, what is the better out of the models i've mentioned? Hate wasting money, ha ha!!

At the moment i'm thinking Sigma, but like the way the breaker comes down on the Montolit when lifted (although the Sigma only has one action, less likely to break?). Last but not least, the Rubi, is it any good?

Lots of questions, I know, but really need the advice.

Cheers, Jez:mad2:

That breaker on the monty is a secondary breaker, the main breaker is at the end of the arm and is adjustable for tile thickness allowing you to apply the correct movement to break the tile but reduce the potential to crush.
Have never used a Sigma so can't comment on that and the Rubi, for me, is a less capable imitation of the Monty. (I have a Monty 63 if you hadn't already guessed).

i have a sigma new model and several rubis ts,tx etc i also bought cheap the 60mm genesis and its quality compared to the rubi and sigma is not great, but it breaks true anything you throw at it infact its now used as my prefered cutter on porcelain floors, for the price id say its the best value on the market,if they could sort out the guage marker, the cutting scribes (i use rubi bits), the alignment when new aint great it dont allow much adjustment, the bed mats come unstuck and you need to spray glue them, the box catches are flimsy, these are sloppy build mistakes that would cost nothing to correct.
but the breaking system and the fact its a rail cutter works for me.

Dave, thanks for that, much appreciated. Made my mind up now and going to order it this weekend. The thing that nailed it for me is the ease of getting new/replacement parts. To me it looks a better machine than Sigma and having both quality and value ticks my boxes at the moment.

Next on the agenda is a decent wet cutter.

Thanks to everyone that gave me feedback, it won't be forgotten.

Now you will never get everyone to agree on that.
Wheels are more expensive, Sigma wheels last ages. I am on about my 5th wheel since 2001 and it gets used almost everyday with all types of tile. They dont cost much either. Never needed a spare part, so i couldnt comment.

Sir Ramic and Frankenferter.

Where do you buy your Sigma gear. I'd made my mind up, but if I can find a decent distributor then I may change, ha ha. Have you push or pull models??

Rubi seems to be more readily available. But Sigma have been doing single rail gear for a long time and perhaps would be better to go for because of their experience??

Don't want to make a purchase i'll regret, ha ha.

Jez - Sorry mate but I don't agree with most of your comments.

In all forms of employment there are people not up to the standard and quality that is considered as acceptable and I'am not sure why its the building industry (and here tilers) that the term cowboy has become synonymous.
You may be confident in your own ability, however you will find that if you do offer a service to the high end market you will not be able 'to churn it out'!
As far as cutters are concered I've used Rubi for years and as far as breakages are concerned - i wouldn't blame my tools!.

Happy days:thumbsup:

Timeless John.
