Site Work

Site work us fine, you get good and bad , same as residential. Site work is essentially factory work / production line . But the pay is better ( generally ), all down to speed though and how much you want to earn. Most sites let you stay late anyway if you want finish off a particular plot.
My biggest tip is to do work correctly ( and slower )first time , then you wont have to go back to it.
Take me for instance (due to circumstances ) i'm happy doing 10m a day , anymore is a bonus.Ok Im slower, But, since working this lazt year for my new contractor , ive not once had to go back to anything.
One of his other guys (quicker than me) last week spent 2 days for nothing , putting right his flooring. So in fact I earnt more.
Oh and save a couple of bucket lids and take ur own water its sooooooo much easier to have it on ur van in the morning.

I only do site work for one builder now, the rest is private domestic through personal recommendations.
I'm lucky in that the builder who I do it for, always pays whatever job price I give and also pays on time, so never need to rush which is not something I do anyway.

Experience has taught me do it at your own pace and do it right first time - that way you'll always have work.

I thought we had done the Site work thread ? Anyway, i have recently gone back on site. I am loving it, Health and safety no problem, Plenty of space to work, sometimes power on in the house or I have the generator but its mostly cordless grinder. The batteries last well and only rarely run out of power.
Pay is good too, ok not what you would get for private but I have earned more in teh last 2 weeks than i did in the previous month doing my own stuff. I will say though that I have tried sub contracting to other tiling companies before and while i made good money, this company I am with now pays better and jobs have plenty of meat in them....big floors, fully tiled bathrooms, Porcelain tiles.....300x600 and 600x600...sometimes standard nice ceramics.
I have adhesives etc delivered to my house and all tiles are on site waiting for me...ask nicely and the labourer will carry them in or you or a breakfast sandwich !
Only bad part is there is a moody grumpy tiler on some sites that I have shared a house with....names Deano ! lol

Also, when it rains it's always up to the guts in mud on sites.

I've been on another private job today, nice clean block paved driveway, tea or coffee as and when - bit spoilt really lol.

I spent years doing site work and personally prefer it to domestic. Some jobs have been a nightmare but so are some domestic ones. 95% of my work now is for 4 local builders who I go out of my way to help out as they keep me busy week after week and I've never once had a payment issue with any of them.

I just done a privet job this weekend first one for quite a long time i've been turning them down but this was for a kitchen company that has just started up again after shutting down in the recession. Anyway i said i would do this one for them but it has been a bit of a pig especially when you are setup for site work. It was kitchen walls and floor wall tiles not the best. I had to remove and replace washing machine and dryer remove cut down and replace two doors remove cut down and replace plinths polish off and silicon up. Its nice to do now and again but i'm for the easy life now and for me that is site work with good walls and floors empty rooms and just getting on with tiling not all the other crap.

Hmmm well it looks as though I could be eating my words as the last 2 weeks havent been the best for me on site....The travelling is killing me, I spend 10 hours a week driving . The Site agent is worse than useless, told him about an issue in a house, he did nothing ! I told him about another issue in another and probably every house in the future , he said he would come and see.....never saw him all day. I waited 3 hours for tiles.
I was sent to another site to do a repair only for that site agent to turn up late then tell me I cant access house until 9am, i had agreed 8am with main tile contractor.
I was then told I couldnt do the as the client hadnt marked the tiles he wanted replaced ( I didnt work on this job by the way). I returned late in the week to do repair again and was told when I arrived it was cancelled.
The work given to me now is not as good as when I first started with the properties being much smaller but just as time consuming........I feel that me and the contractor need to come to some better agreement before too long or I will be going elsewhere.
Another issue was that I have been turning work down from people I used to work with because I thought this was better, time to think again !

Always found it difficult to mix site work with private work......seems to be one or the other unless your prepared to work silly hours........Personally I would hate to loose my contacts in the private sector by keeping my eggs in one basket.....did that in the late 80's early 90's.......and it cost me dearly..

As I am now finding out, I got this one wrong by the looks of it !

As a trainee u need site work!
It's something u must go thro to learn ur craft!
It forms the basis of our trade!
There u can make mistakes and it doesn't have the implications that a private job would have!
U need to be around other fixers to start with.
It's like being new in a job and having to make the tea for 6 months,
A necessary evil!

I found they were the better at H&S even in the seventies....
