we nearly got snowed into a local community centre which had a bar

a few days before christmas we got a call asking if we could help out by helping cook for and feed a village that had lost its gas supply due to a burst water main

the gas pipes filled with water and froze

to add to their problems the electricity supply overloaded due to the electric heaters and hobs that were handed out and cut out

the community centre was out of the village and their utilities are fed from the neighbouring village so the villagers spent their time there to keep warm and to eat

it was also the nerve centre for the gas , water board and electricity companies, in addition to this the tv crews were based there

as there was nowhere to get food locally we had to feed the lot

when we arrived it was starting to snow and snowed steadily all day burying the cars and blocking the roads

after we cleared up we went to leave aand were advised against it

we were offered beds in the village but we had to get home as we had left the dog on her own

i hadnt considered it before but all the roads out of the village were steep hills

it took over an hour to travel about two miles and we nearly left the road several times

it was only the hedges that kept us on track as we couldnt see the road

were have become unused to this kind of weather and were not prepared for it

im getting snow chains and putting together an emergency kit for the car in case we have to spend the night in the car

we have another month or so of this weather forecast

yes it was caddington

ive been through it thousands of times and the hills dont seem much untill they are buried in snow

ive never seen snow that deep, it had drifted and buried the cars

people had abandoned their cars and they blended into the verge it was only the fact they had left their interior lights on that we could see them


when we got to the a5 it was only a couple of inches and was passable through dunstable

the locals are used to getting snowed in as it was them that told us we were better off waiting till the morning and offered us beds for the night

its really got me thinking about how ill prepared we are for such eventualities

this could happen anywhere. ive asked my local councillers what would happen if it happened in leighton

they didnt know

they would have to go to central beds council for help

ive spoken to the major at leighton salvation army and we are putting together an emergancy commitee to swing into action if something like this happens

weve hit our first hurdle

we all have to be crb checked which costs £65 each and takes months

were carrying on anyway as theres no reason we shouldnt pass

woke up again this morning to find another few inches fell over night,that's about every 2 days we have had snow for a fortnight now:mad2:

I tried getting to work this morning but turned back cos I couldn't get through Endon. Just spent 1.5 hours getting home :mad2: Gonna email the boss and say I'm not going to make another attempt. Got no work with me tho, so looks like a TF day for me

What's the legal position for employed people getting snowed in Liz? Do we have to take a days holiday for it?

there's no employment legislation for it at all, so it comes down to individual employers views. I'll take a days holiday if I have to but considering my boss and one of my colleagues (who lives 2 streets away from me) have both said they're working from home today because they didn't want to risk travelling, then I don't see why I should have to take a holiday.

if your employer has a bad weather policy tho, it may be worth checking it.

But I wasn't risking my safety and my car by continuing to try and reach work, only to have to turn round 2 hours later and try and get home. The Highways Agency have said only travel if it's an absolute necessity today, and the gritters can't get round the roads if they're blocked with cars, so I'm tucked up in bed with my lappy eating biscuits :lol:

I'm pretty sure my boss will be unhappy that I haven't made it to work. But he saw fit to "downgrade" the job I currently have before I started so I didn't need a laptop, mobile or blackberry :lol:

we seem to have run out of salt for the roads up here and it reached -15 in Aberdeen last night.

Staffordshire County Council have admitted that there is only enough grit left for 4 more days of bad weather :yikes:

Hemel Hempstead Mike, I've worked in Caddington and it's surprising you don't notice the roads until something like this weather.

There's some big money people tucked away round here, not me though
