My brother is having issues with his old tiles on his kitchen floor. The tiles are down about 6 years and have started coming loose and cracking.
I am trying to presuade him to re-tile so i can get the experience, but i need some good advise to give him on why this is happening and what i can do to stop it happening in the future!!!!!
Thanks for any help//..

Could be bad preparation, the wrong adhesive, not enough adhesive. Loads of different reasons. Lift a tile and see what the coverage is like.
If it does need re tiling the existing has to come up anyway.

I don't think he has a lot of choice, Cracked and coming loose what else are you going to do.

thanks..
it looks like there is a good coverage of adhesive, but the adhesive is not stuck to the tiles? i lifted a few and noticed that the tiles are coming up pretty easy and the adhesive wasn't really on the back of the tile very much. would this be from the wrong adhesive being used? or just a bad quality adhesive?

If the tiles are coming up with hardly any adhesive on them then that means the coverage wasn't good at all.

When a tile has had good coverage the tile should come up with the adhesive still on them and possibly even some of the subflooring too, depending on what the subfloor is.

thanks for that...
i will try and talk him into giving me the job.. at the minute he is just sticking the loose ones back down again!!! :mad2:

It could be the adhesive had gone beyond its open time by the time the tiles were placed and therefore they had not adhered to the tile. Just a thought.
Correct coverage with the correct adhesive then there would be no problems.

A lot of people, when using powder mix maybe, rapid set attempt to use product when gone past its open time,i have also seen, the adding water to a setting mix to make it workable. argghh
