Terracotta tile replacement

Some of the tiles have come away from my step as you can see in the pictures below. None of the tiles are damaged and all I want to do is replace them and restore the step. There are other tiles near the front edge that are getting a bit loose but further in towards the door the tiles are sound.

I am a complete novice in the world of DIY so any restoration advice greatly received.

Hello...you will probobaly find that once to start removin tiles then more will come loose and looking at that one in your hand and to the side on the front then there is a good reason they are coming loose...insufficent adhesive...

You might just find they all will need to come off or will just come up easy anyway..

Thanks Dave. So do I use a chisel and get rid of old adhesive stuck to the step? What about the old adhesive still on the tiles - chisel that away too?

Sorry I really am a novice! Would it be better looking at some FAQs/stickys/previous threads before I post again? Have you any useful links?

Chisel the old adhesive off the step as you say....then use a grinder to clean the tile backs if the adhesive is stubborn...

Prime the step and use a good quality flexi adhesive and grout....Back skimming the tiles as you lay will create a good bond to your adhersive bed as the tiles look like they have a heavy ribbed back profile...


Also a small tip for a diy'r....number the tiles with a wax crayon.....in a grid pattern then you will know exactly which tile goes where as you relay it....

Either graph a grid on paper and numer to match the tiles or take a photo of the numbered tiles to follow...
