Your tile/ufh installer should have instructed you on starting up the ufh..
Like you say it may have been there a while but usually faults take time to develop

Ok thanks, do you have any idea how long I need to wait to be sure I'm safe from any side effects of not having done this? Also one more question - does this only need to be done when it is first installed, or would I need to do it after a period of non-use (I probably won't use it over the summer for example)

On the initial start up, adhesive needs about 2-3 weeks to cure properly...then a couple of degrees a day, running at temperature for about 3 days, then slowly bring it down per day to be sure.

Thanks, yes I didn't do this. What I'd like to know is, bearing in mind I didn't do this in late November, by what point in time would it be expected that any problems that were going to arise from it, would have happened?

There's not a lot that can be done now...only time will tell but you may have got away with it this time.

If you get a crunching sound when walking on them or some become loose then you will be looking at problems.

That looks like a flaw in the tile.
As already stated ufh should have been commissioned & it's too late now to worry about it.

To be safe, after any long period of time where the UFH hasn't been used you should turn the heating on over a period of a few days to prevent any kind of thermal shock.

It looks like a fault in the tile to me
