Tile layout problem?

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

I think this will be another late night for me.
Thanks god for you guys, hopfully another disaster avoided.

Am I assuming that there needs to be an expansion joint between the new build screed and the original house concrete floor..
Are we ok without an expansion joint where we knocked down the wall between the old lounge and the old kitchen .
What is an expansion joint, and does the tiler do it. Should the builder have done it?
Gosh i really dont know what I'm doing now

Tried that forum but nothing found under my postcode, how do |I know if they are from this forum?
I was really looking forward to seeing this floor done but it is becoming a nightmare.

There should by rights be an expansion joint put between the two pads by the builder or who ever laid the pads..then the tiler puts an expansion joint above this joint....

Firstly an expansion joint should go where there is already an expansion joint in the substrate...if there is one..like this pic..

these joints can be filled with Silicon for light domestic use and you can use one the same colour as the grout...for high trafficked areas then a profiled expansion joints should be used..as in the pic...

These joints should go in about every 6 to 10 mtrs in either direction..this will reduce when tiling to heated floors.. these then become about every 4 to 6 mtrs in either direction....

If using the Silicon method ( also known as a cold joint ) then just keep the joint clean and dry prior to using Silicon....and if using the profile trim then it beds into the adhesive as shown in the pic.....hope this helps mate and good luck with the floor........

There is no expansion joint visible on the new screed, it was only laid 6 weeks ago, no mention of this on the drawing either. New screed laid level up to old existing floor. Do I assume there is not an expansion gap?

The pillars ( you mention pads) are where the back of the house was knocked out through to the extension.

If there is not an expansion gap visible on the floor waht does the tiler do? Have I got do have a "break line right in the middle of my new floor.

I am at my wits end now, as I mentioned I have had 3 tilers round to quote for the job and none have mentioned this.

Hi mick...obviously if the builders haven't put in an expansion joint then you won't see it.
You will just have to tile it really and hope for the best....
Unless a new floor was laid through out the old and new extension then as far as i am concerned an expansion joint should have been put where the old floor meets the new one...good luck mate and let us know how you get on....

hi mick dont gamble -put a 3mm colour matched silicon joint shere thr old concrete finished,i know you cant see it but you will have to work it out and get it as close as possible .this then dictates your horizontal lines [on plan] centre your vertical lines so it is nice and equidistent ,at2250, above all tell your customer what and why your doing this,as soon as you mention possible future cracks people become VERY understanding!
