Tiling on a painted plasterboard. HELP

Well that's what they told me, personally I'd be over boarding or replacing the plaster board for all it would cost to do anyway.

If the paint is well stuck and survives the 'tape test'(decent sticky tape used) and, doesn't rub off with a wet cloth, (which being used in a bathroom it shouldn't. Prime it with mapei Eco prim grip, wait for it to dry and tile away.

I remove the paint from the plasterboard, with sandpaper mounted on grinder, primer and posing. stop

As it is a 3yr old new build the tile adhesive will probably ready mixed and will pop off easily enough.......likewise the walls will be dry lined, so I would reluctant to interfere with the integrity of the walls
It looks like you definately enough depth on the bath to overboard the walls with new PB if you didnt want to remove the PB around the bath

I tiled a kitchen splashback only a week or so ago and that had one small area of painted plasterboard, not plastered, it was well and truly on there and would not scratch off so I primed and tiled it with standard set, no problem. Might be a different story if it was a bathroom with heavy tiles tho. Emulsion normally comes off easily if you wet it. If that is the case you need to get it off.

BAL technical told me in the past to apply a piece of high quality sellotape to the wall and rub on firmly, leave it for ten minutes and then remove it, if the tape pulls the paint off then you can't tile on it, if not then it should be fine providing you don't exceed the weight limits for plasterboard.

For eggshell and gloss. Not emulsion. Somewhere in bs5385 i seem to remember advice being to score 2mm x 2mm lines into the paint with Stanley knife, then apply tape. If it removes most of the paint (which invariably it will) don't tile direct, mechanically remove the paint.

Just prime it and tile ,what size

Can't just prime and tile emulsion.especially if it's floor to ceiling ! it's water based and breaks down when wet. at very leased rake walls with old saw blade to get a decent key then sbr.deffo wouldn't put anything over 20kg/m on it tho

I think half way up wall be ok but anything above head height is a real danger. I'd wanna be 100% sure nowts coming down and tiling onto emulsion walls I wouldn't be

After reading all these comments which I really appreciate. I'm gona put some elbow grease into this bathroom and scrape, sand the walls down. I have a steamer and if I need to use this and spend all day removing the paint then so be it.

Firm believer of if you do things the right way it won't come back and bite you on your arse

What a pain in the arse tho with painted walls. Days labour will be just the removal of paint lol

Just a word of caution regarding using a steamer........if your walls are dry lined, you will end up ruining the PB before getting the paint off.
If you remove one of the tiles you should be able to distinguish between a dry lined wall and a plastered wall........a plastered wall, you should be able to steam the paint off easier.
