topps have told me that 6mm backer boards will be ok over a wooden floor.
Sounds a bit thin to me, but has anyone got any advice....!

i always use 10mm not ply any more few of these guys here seem to use 6mm would scare me that thin maybe if you used crumb but would be cheaper using 10mm and spf Pete

Cheers pjc, I thought 6mm seemed a bit thin for the job.
Can you tell me what crumb is though...?

bal fastflex PCI timberflex ect we all have diffent views on this 6mm seems to work for some

James Hardie installation literature indicates that Hardibacker 250 (6mm) should be used on floors, along with stipulating that movement in the floor should be inline with local building standards(?) and stipulates not less than 15.8mm ply (or other board) as a substrate. I assume 18mm T&G chipboard is OK then?

Grumpy

6mm Hardiebacker onto chipboard with spf is fine....6mm onto t&g boards is not ! a minimum cement based board of 10mm is required for spf. A small area ie 4m bathroom floor would be ok...but the greater ther area then the more movement and deflection there is.so it is unwise and not recommended.....Gaz

When installing backer boards on wood subfloors the adhesive you use to stick it down with must have 100% coverage and no voids..thus creating a solid floor..then screwed down as well to hold it so it doesn't debond....
