can you straighten walls with adh or is it that bad

Yeh i could probably build up adhesive a bit then lay the board. But should I use 6mm (as Hardie seem to recommend) or 12mm board?

12 mm would carry weight better but can you straiten walls with just adh a bit like rendering but with adh thin style then let it dry over night then tile

I could have a go, though putting cement board up may be a bit easier for my limited experience.

According to Hardie, there is no change to the weight difference from using 6mm board to 12mm board. I guess it's because it's being mounted on a solid wall as opposed to studs.

6mm is a damn sight easier to cut!

I was planning the same thing with my extension and going to put hardie straight to the block work but architect has put insulated boards so i HAVE to insulate it first.

The PDF file that Hardie sent me says:

"Use tile adhesive that complies with BS EN 13888:2002 or preferably BS 5980:1980, type 1, 2 or 3. Adhesives for use with ceramic tiles and mosaics."

I have got excel bond single part flexible tile adhesive for my travertine tiles. This adhesive conforms as it has the BS 5980 numer quoted on it. However, this tile adhesive is over £40 a bag and if I use this to adhere the tile backer board then I'm sure to run out.

Is there an alternative adhesive that works out more economical that I could buy for the purpose of fixing the backer boards up?

I checked down B&Q and they have a rapid set Unibond tile adhesive for ceramics at £14.99 but it doesn't reference any of the numbers quoted on the pdf. It has a different EN number. Anyone any guidance? Thanks, Daz

best to stick by the pdf if you dont and it fails you have no comeback
