My first attempt at door trimming went horribly wrong today after taking the mesurements...securing the door to saw horses and marking i proceded to cut with circular saw...found this a mission to use was a huge 230mm Makita from a hire shop 40Teeth blade...i secured straight edge to door...but found the saw wondering off into my straight edge damaging it :( so opted for the clean cut jigsaw...wasn't much better but thought i could plain it back a bit after...took it upstairs...customer is watching me :yikes: and what do u know i'd made the schoolboy error and cut off the top instead of bottom :mad2: lovely pine natural door... told the customer not to worry i'd get it sorted straight on the phone to the carpenter
He told me it would be better to use a handsaw...what do u guys use and how the hell do u keep those circular saws in a straight line?

I just use a hand saw, have used my circular with no probs in the past tho' by clamping a straight edge to bottom (ahem) of door

well u live and learn don't you fortunately the carpenter i plucked out of the yellow pages seemed to be skilled and friendly and reckoned he could sought it out without to much trouble...

Think i will have to invest in a door trimmer at some point...do you just trim the door as you go e.g if the door deosn't clear the ply trim...then trim again after tiling...or just estimate by adding ply + tile + adhesive and take off at start?

one thing i am going to do is keep my eye out on the skips etc see if i can get some oldies to practice on!

Those festool circular saws look good...can you get larger rails or just move it as you go for larger pieces of wood?

800mm, 1080mm, 1400mm and 2700mm I think, but they clamp together so you can cut any length. The saws come with the 1400mm rail, i think i'm gonna get the 1080mm as well then I should be able to cut anything i come across then once they are joined, what's lovely about them is they don't need clamping down as the rubber strips underneath stop it from sliding around, i haven't come across a surface yet that needed the rail clamping. I really can't speak highly enough of this tool, worth every penny, once you've used one you'll want it. Do i sound like a salesman yet?? Oh one last thing... Festool set the prices so who ever stocks it has to sell it for the RRP so you know your not getting ripped off

The Fein tool - useful for various things tiling wise has an undercut blade for doors etc - that is the dogs b's. I always took doors down, hand or rip cut, but the Fein tool means you leave the door in place, mark the line and go - the blade just melts into the timber. Takes about 4 mins for the average door, seconds for hollows, and is v light touch - no trouble holding it to the line.
