ufh failure

had a call from a client id done a bathroom for a while ago, ufh not working,he said he hadnt commisioned it because of the nice weather ect, anyways no heat coming through, he asked if i had nicked the cable, couldnt of because it was slc over full area,he asks can i take a tile up cos the electrician knows exactly where the problem might be,ok but might damage surrounding tiles getting it out ect, turns out the electrician has cut the matt to suit the floor and taped the probe to the end,so he is going to leave it ?

I'm not too sure if you are asking a question or just stating a fact. No question..... sparky is responsible. Did you not check it all (resistance etc) yourself prior to SLC?

If he has cut the mat/element it's knackered. All the floor will have to come up or you could be lucky and have fitted a type that can be repaired.
Either way it's the sparkys fault.

yea just making a statement, couldnt beleive spark had cut end of matt off to fit floor,
then taped/jointed the probe back on,
The temp probe isn't taped to the mat. It's laid between the elements and wired to the controller.

like i said, ufh was down to the spark, he tested it , layed it , then cut it to suit ?
then wonders why it dont work,i asked the client to make sure he tested it before install, i wouldnt have slc otherwise, client just gunna live with it,i wouldnt id want it back up at sparks expense

What was the sparky thinking, what a div.
Try this bloke, he'll tell you if this floor is salvagable, and if it is get him in: Steve Ashby, 07989 382218.
He's an expert in repairing electric under floor heating. He's not cheap, but i used him on a job that failed (my fein Multimaster's fault, honestly, not mine). He located the problem down to the tile. He took the tile out, reconntected the fault. Also if he does the work some manufacturers will still validate the warranty. Very very impressive.
Good luck!

I don't trust anyone whilst you're laying these floors. Get a multimeter and test the mat yourself. Then use an alarm as mentioned above to alert you if there is a problem.

So ignoring the probe for a moment , you're saying that he cut off excess length of the mat?

If that is the case then yes , as Chalker quite rightly states , it's useless and un-repairable.

Also to add , a sparky who cuts an electrical mat , shouldn't be a sparky , IMHO.

Diggy

This is one reason I will not install ufh and always tell the customer that the ufh must be tested before I carry out any tiling, to be honest I hate tiling onto ufh anything goes wrong the tiler will always be the first one to blame,Ive never had a problem yet but law of averages it might happen

Honestly Afright, they really aren't too bad. Just make sure you do the work, get a sparky to check, but don't let them any where near fitting it! A multi meter and an alarm is all you need, quite simple really after a bit of practise.

I have fitted them I know there easy to do but just rather not, do not want the responsibility if it goes wrong would not want the big expense of putting it right.

what normally happens when working with sparks that i get in to install ufh, they will test it ill prep floor they lay it ,i slc then they test again f every things ok ,ill lay floor,on this occasion client got his own sparky, told him to test before laying, which he did, where he fell off was cutting the end of the matt off and sticking the sensor back on, the client accepts its down to the spark, ive offered to remove tiles if he wishes, but he is going to live with no ufh, which defeats the object in my eyes, shamefull really

Worked on some flats in London , the first bathroom the ufh was done by the foreman (who was fussy about everybodys work) he got fed up with doing it so I did the next 7 bathrooms, when the job was all finished one bathroom was not working so I got a phone call say it was my problem travel up to London round trip of 150 miles and guess what it was the bathroom that the foreman had done it turned out there was so much cable he got fed up and hid half of it under the bath before it was boxed in,thats why I do not want to do any more.

Not sure what you mean by "sticking the sensor back on" but if the end's been cut off the matt then I'd have thought that it could be repaired with the correct kit. Worth speaking to the manufacturer before it's written off. If it's repairable and you know where the matt ends then might be an easy fix. Hopefully he hasn't actually stuck the sensor to the end of the matt though.

Bugs, I agree, always test resistance before during and after tiling, Steve is the bees knees, have used him a couple of times and as you say an expert in his field but not cheap! better than a whole new floor though
