Hi All

I would class my self as competent DIYer.

I am about till the walls on a small bathroom. The walls are plaster with bricks behind it. The plaster is pretty smooth and is in good condition but there are some humps and bumps in it, visible when you place a batten on the wall not to the naked eye.

I have seen several professional tiling jobs in the last few days. One thing have noticed is that the adhesive on the wall seems to be fairly think and the tiles all flat. Is it that they use 10mm or thicker notched trawl to ensure that all the tiles are flat against the wall and to even out any humps and bumps.

I have always assumed that the wall trawls should be 6mm round or square notched ?

Can people in the know please comment. Thanks

PS I will be using BAL powered wall tile adesehive.

BAL powered lol. Love it. Checkout some other brands too, as you'll find you'll be paying a lot as a retail customer for BAL gear. It's the most expensive adhesive about.

Also, make sure you get a couple of quotes from professional's, it could save you money if they can get the gear at trade price, and fix it for you with no problems guaranteed. Small or large area it can work out cheaper to get a professional to get the stuff and fix it all for you. Will save you hassle too perhaps?

Though if it's DIY and DIY only, obviously we're here to help with advice.

All the best, and be sure to post some before and after pictures for us, we love those! :)

I did compare the pound per Kg with other powdered adhesive from other retailers and found it to be almost in a par with others.

I did get quotes from some professional tilers and found it to be very expensive anyway I want to learn as I will want do few other tiling jobs around the house

Thanks for the advice though

how big are these lumps and bumps? you say it's not visable to the naked eye, so is it under 3mm? if so you'll be fine with a 6mm trowel

:welcome:Newdud.

Preparation is the key! Make good your walls before you start tiling and get them as flat as you can. Build out any hollows and take out the humps! It will save you money in the long run because adhesive is expensive and then you can use the right size serrated trowel for the right size tiles!
