Hi guys

Sorry to start a new thread but due to me not posting in it a lot it has been closed. :-(

Any way well into tiling the bathroom now :) just need to hire a decent tile cutter (fitting 600 *400 travs) and random on the floors.

I posted a couple of pics a while a go, i have a few more to post to show how getting on.

Just a quickie ( Thats what she always says hahahah)

Lined all the walls with Backerboard and started on them, i have now met the exterior plastered wall around the bath, question is do i need to prime\ seal this wall at all as this will be where the shower will be also.

The wall and plaster is sound and when i removed the old tiles they where pretty solid and there doesnt appear to be water that has got through from recent years.

Thanks alot for reading.

Gaz

Ps

should i post all pics at once or is there some where i can ftp them.

With the tiles you are fitting, you should be using a powder adhesive. Because of this you should prime the plaster walls with something like BAL APD primer to stop the plaster reacting with the cement adhesive.

Ideally you should waterproof the plaster walls with an appropriate tanking system to give added protection. Your backerboards are designed to be water resistant so wouldn't need tanking.

Incedently, you may want to proceed with caution putting that size stone tiles on to plaster walls, plaster will only really support 20kg/m2 and I suspect that your tiles may exceed that weight, especially when you calculate in the weight of plaster and grout.

Thanks fo the reply.

So assuming tiles are too heavy what would be an appropriate action to do.

Thanks again

Gary
It may be appropriate to continue with backerboard all the way around but ensure that it is attached FIRMLY not only with adhesive but plugged and screwed through the plaster to the blockwork behind it.

If you attach the backerboard (what sort?) in accordance with the manufacturers instructions it will support up to 50kg/m2 of tiling. Suppose you could remove the plaster and dot and dab to the block work behind as well but may be a bit messy that.

Only real alternative that I am aware of would be to use different tiles that are not so heavy.

Other more experienced guys may post info later to give you alternatives.

You may struggle to scrape all the plaster if it's adhered well but if it's flakey try it. If the render is powdery the finish will probably come off easy, but render may not be right for tiling. Some plasterers rendered with soft sand which is not strong enough. Above all that if you manage to get the finish off and the render is good I would still prime the walls because there will be residue of plaster, best of luck.

I'd fix the backerboards to the actual brickwork behind the plaster, so drill through with a long drill bit and plug and then screw through the backerboard according to the manufacturers guide (we don't know what board you have).

Dot and dabbing probably will just be messy.

Bloody hell didnt realise id have to do that.

The wall is only 9' x 7' and will only have about 18 tiles or so on.

so i need to overlay the wall with backerboard and bond and screw it ! jesus that'll take 20mm off the size of the room will need turn side ways to get in now lol.

Ok im off to topps now, Gaz hope you have some in fella.

@Grumpy

Im not trying to find a quick way out or anything but (theres always a but lol )

Do you think that would be ok as the wall seems bloody solid and i had to really bash the old tiles off.

I was just about to nip out and get the boards. i was going to prime the walls prior to tiling any way.

Gaz

Ps thanks for replies.

Hi Gaz, we as forum contributors can only offer advice as we see it from the questions posted. If you are confident that the walls are able to take the load you are proposing to put on it then by all means go ahead.

I personally would take the longer, more expensive and ultimately safer root of doing it as has been suggested. Consider that 4m2 of solid stone weighing something like 100kg could fall off into your nice new bathroom, possibly hurting/killing someone and then make a decision based on cost.

It is your call as you are the only person that has seen the conditions upon which you are tiling.

Whichever way you go, let us know how you get on and maybe post some pictures to the gallery. Good luck.
