Hi guys,

I have never done any tanking and ive done a few bathrooms now with showers.

Stupid question coming up.

What is Tanking exactly and how much does it cost if a customer wanted it to cover where the shower sprays

Ive got a trade account for topps and i use Bal Whitestar for where the shower sprays then toppfix Waterproof everywhere else

Tanking is a protective waterproof membrane that is applied to the substrate prior to tiling. It is usually a rubberised type of substance when cured. There are a few different types about. I use Ardex WPC myself. Pretty much paint on and is ready to accept tiling in 2 hours.

If you are using white star, why aren't you using it every where? Don't see the point in changing addy half way through! White Star is probably the best tub stuff you can get.

its all about money, if im supplying the mats i know bal is the best out there especially for wetter walls but very expensive. Toppfix is good stuff and alot cheaper.

Where do you get your waterproofing from them and how much does it cost ?

I buy it online and it is about £50 a kit. Still don't see the point in chopping and changing adhesives but that is your chice. I get White Star for £14 which is passed onto the customer. usually they are not aware of your costs anyway.

Thanks Howard. I have been through that procedure already. Unfortunately the "stockist" Ardex gave me were national chains and they don't "stock" what I actually require - though they did say they could order it in for me, but there would be no trade discount as it was special order.

I can get Ardex stuff but my supplier doesn't stock everything in the range. As yet I have not been able to source AM100, even off the 'net!
