Many moons ago I started out as an apprentice with what was then Post Office Telephones. I was attached to an cable jointing gang as my first work.
One day we had to get into a carriageway manhole. The road had been a lane on the edge of town but it had been realligned when a new housing estate was built so the hole didn't leave a lot of room for traffic to pass. To minimise the obstruction the jointer parked the back of the van as close as he could to the hole. We took the cover off and I climbed down to put some sheets over the existing cables before starting work. What I didn't know was that the back door of the van had been opened above the hole. When I climbed out I hit my head on the corner of the van door and gashed it open.
I was bleeding like a stuck pig, the jointer put me in the van and drove me to the local hospital, but in his panic got confused and took me to the maternity ward.
The best bit was that that morning for the first time ever we had been issued with safety helmets - mine was still in the box in the van.
