So after all that Kev, you actually agree with me that a full days rate was wrong ? :mad2:

I thought a half days rate was spot on for that job.

I apologise for the confrontation Kev, tho it may have looked like it, my aim wasn't to give tilers like yourself a hard time

No need to apologise!!! I love healthy debate!!! I don't fix tiles anymore by the way! What's more when I was, my daily rate was more than £150! But heyho that's me and people have to charge what works for them:thumbsup:

never under sell your skills! when ever i go out to price a job - regardless of who it is for - i give a fair price and if they complain about it saying "yeah but i'm a mate" or "I'm such and such a mate can you not lower the price?' i just ask them if they want "the right to complain?" usually shuts them up and you will end up with the job 99 times out of a 100!!

how'd the job go btw eggman??

We use a minimum charge system.
So even if it is a small repair it is $250.
No exceptions.
If they quibble they can find another outfit.

Even if it takes an hour to do the job, which it typically doesn't, you still have to drive there and you are going to burn up at least half a day.
Our day rate is $500.
(that's in canadian dollars)

people who know you tend to think that they should be given price cuts due to that reason, yet when you go to their shops it is seldom the case as they have "overhead" and "shop rates".

Does your dentist give you a break because he knows you?

My rule, which I learned from the guy I apprenticed under is full price, or free.
No half price, cut rate BS.
It makes one look like a chump.
When you do a deal for free you are banking up some heavy favors and they will feel indebted to you.
Which is a good thing.
What goes around comes around.

when you go into a fuel station and see the price of your "gas" or fuel as we call it, dont you think to yourself "im being robbed" ? i know i do !!

say i phoned you and said "hi Alberta, i have a completely flat wall that is 2 metres long by 2 metres high and i want 330mmx250mm tiles put up (48 tiles), how much would you charge?", I would then get a quote for $250 ?!! so if it took you an hour to put them up (most tilers could do this easily in an hour) you then theoretically could have done 8 hours of work and your labour is worth $2000 ?!!!

lets not go over this subject again about what you should and shouldn't charge, the bottom line is that you're a con artist

Ya know, it is not worth my time to chase after these piddly little jobs, but if they come up the minimum is $250 or I am not interested.
No arguments.
If it is too steep for them then they can find someone else.
I need a cash flow of $500 per day (which does not always happen) and even a little thing like that would take half a day to round up everything, get to the job, cover my material costs and even if I used rapid set (which starts at $35 per bag here) it would still take time to wait for it to set and then return to grout.
Everyone I have worked for has appreciated the work I do and you are the first I have heard to say such things in decades.
I do not gouge my customers.
The fact that we are in different continents is another thing to consider as well.
But everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Crikey! What a roller coaster. I just read all four pages(so far) of this dust up. I have been spared having to watch 'Strictly Come Dancing' though!!!

What I have learnt is that everyone seems to have a different way of doing things when it comes to pricing. There are lots of people here who think that their's is the 'only way' and the rest of us are cowboys. I now feel like a complete charlatan/tiling imposter.

I'm going to go out tomorrow and find a special disc for cutting glass, for fear of being bombarded with scorn! Perhaps by tomorrow I will be a real tiler!
Jim:grin:
