Who taught you what you know?

Apart as tiling who has taught you most of your work skills that you know?
Myself if it wasn't for my dad i would be knackered. Taught me so much, was only a few months ago when a customer said they want the toilet removing and a rad taking off, i didn't have a clue. Asked my dad to give me a hand and has basically shown me all i need to know (old get had the toilet off in 2 mins carrying it to the skip, and he has had 6 heart attacks). So i can now basically remove things like rads, sinks and toilets with no bother atall. Last job i even took off an electric shower and installed a mixer tap.

So who taught you the little things like taking out a toilet?

read books and watching other tradesmen and just picking it up from there really.Also like to do a bit of joinery like doors, fitted wardrobes,partitioning and using the MDF cladding for ceilings(same size as laminate flooring and installed the same way).

Unless your a qualified sparky I'd never touch electrics in a customers home, my own then yes, but never a customers, even if it is just a simple dissconection.

Does your liability insurance cover you for removal of plumbing works too ?

I know what you mean, it's good to learn different things, just be on the safe side.

Who taught me the most things.... most probably with out a doubt really, this forum.

I've never had a question that has not been fully answered and explained in full detail if I've needed it.

I have always had the notion of, if I've never done something I think it's very complicated and hard to do, but once you have a go at doing it, I then find out it was so much easier than I'd have thought of, it's quite funny.

Tiling - Darren Yorke and myself with some help from this forum, next step NVQ.

My mate known by amtico as one of the best fitters in Britain, when ever a problem job comes up from amtico, he gets called out to repair, very highly recomended by amtico. Anyway he has shown me the basics of fitting amtico. Also the setting out and prep work are applicable to all tiling so that was handy.

I love joinery, When i bought my flat i basicly ripped every thing out and rebuilt all door frames , skirting , stud wall partitioning and fitted my kitchen, learned myself with books and talking to joiners, would love to do a loft conversion.

I think my next move will be to do some kind of kitchen fitting course. Expensive though.

Do a wee bit of electrics but NEVER EVER in anyone elses home..The problem with electrics is complacency, because its invisabile, has no smell and makes no noise yet by far the most dangerous. DO NOT TOUCH.

Dont really try plumbing, i know i should cos it would help my tiling but i just dont have a passion for it. Short course iminent though, its a must.

Coving How easy is that...eeeeaaasssyyy.

Plastering - yes i some times get plastered, i learned when i was about 16.

Darren Yorke at NETT taught me tiling.

at college for 2 years taught me the basics of tiling, then 3 years on my own has taught me the rest. I learned more in a couple of months on my todd, than the whole 2 years at college tho!

my Dad taught me most of what I know, but I've done a couple of courses more to find out if I am doing it right and if there is an easier or better method...usually is...

I believe it is illegal to do any sort of electrical work now unless you are a fully qualified electrician - even in your own home, ironically. Not hard to change a plug socket though is it!

Self taught..........

Other jobs are by trial and error.........in my own home.
As mentioned.........never ever touch electrics in customers house.........EVER.

Or plumbing......but thats only cos I hate it.

Ripped out and replaced Kitchens and bathrooms in my own places more than once.......thats a bit different to customers houses.



Few have mentioned that their fathers taught them loads..........my dad was crap at any of that.........my mum taught me painting/decorating when i was about 10.

How many kids in todays day and age are interested or bothered about Trades/DIY. My son does'nt show the slightest bit of interest:huh2: Think this generation of kids are going to have to pay people to do the odd jobs.........but then again.........will they be in a position to pay someone ???????

I think it is against the law to do electrical work without being qualified, as you are meant to be able to show the ticket for any form of spark works that have been done in your home... thats what I've heard.
