I don't used paid advertising at all. As a rule I think people prefer recommendations from friends, family and the tile stores. I also carry a portfolio that customers can see for ideas, but it also helps to show the quality of my work etc.
I know of two other tilers who did or do use paid advertising. One of them sticks mainly to domestic work and only had 1 call throughout the entire year. He suffered from the usual "mistakes" with his number/web address etc and eventually closed his business down. The other specialises predominantly in the commercial area and does seem to get plans and tenders sent through. How many of these actually become jobs I do not know as he also has a small network of large contracts that tend to keep him and his team busy.
