Hello everybody. Can anyone please advise me? I have an aurora downlight in the bedroom which needs replacing. The issue is i need to change the whole unit but there's not enough slack to pull the unit out of the ceiling to remove the unit from the power junction. I'm worried if I pull too much I'm going to cause damage that I, a novice, won't be able to fix.

Garden Lights Tripping

I went to see a job today where the garden gu10 spike lights trip out the rcd after an hour. i done an insulation resistance test from the switch and was getting a short between line and earth.

All the spikes and connecter boxes look ok and can't see any signs of water getting in. I disconnected the right hand side lights to see if i could narrow down the fault, and it tripped at some point again after i left. It has an rcd weather proof fusebox in the garden which seems to come of an rcd...

MCB or RCBO to feed a second (garage) consumer unit

I'm a home owner with basic electrical knowledge; I needed my electrics 'brought up to code' in order to have an EV charger installed about 18 months ago. The main fuse was upgraded, a smart meter installed and a new consumer unit installed (also the garage consumer unit was also replaced) . So I have a consumer unit populated with RCBOs except for 1x MCB which supplies the consumer unit in the garage, is the correct or should it be 'protected' by an RCBO?
The reason I'm asking is because...

Extending Immersion wiring

Hi I've to extend the dual immersion wiring both sides , fixed wiring to switch and immersion flex

Usually when extending these loads I double both ends of the wires back and insert wires in the same side and tighten them both under 2 screws. I always assumed this was a better connection than shoving a wire in either side under 1 screw each.

Prefer not to use wagos but just wondered thoughts on this as I've been caught out with an overheated connection on an old job and don't want same...

Hypervolt 3 pro install

Hi everyone.

Appreciate your advice here.

I'm meant to be installing a hypervolt home 3 pro EV charger soon.

There is a mains cable in place outside the house but no cat5 cable unfortunately. The customer sent me the hypervolt installation guide from the website, and I was trying to figure out if I needed a LV cable for load management. It mentions in the ALM (automatic load management) section that the ALM can be adjusted to regulate the max.charging current.

My question is, is this...

One for the oldies

Running a cable in the old stately home I work in sometimes. Due to a change in ceiling height, I’ve drilled through somewhere below the ceiling in the hallway.

Chipped away at the plaster and found these 3 pipes. Ok, they’re not electric for lights and sockets…. That’s in either steel conduit or MICC.

So that gives a choice between either old gas pipe for wall lamps, or a conduit for the room bell call down to the cellar…. Which is an elaborate system of handles, levers and a bell in...

Break in ring circuit

Just has an electrician do an EICR on a domestic property and he detected a break in continuity in the kitchen which as 6 double sockets - one of which supplies the dishwasher. The cooker is on its own MCB. All sockets test OK with a Martindale simple socket tester.

He sensibly down rated the MCB on the ring main to 20A instead of the original 32A.

My questions are ......

How difficult is it to find out where the break is by doing an impedance measurements starting at either end of the...

Where to find Imperial sized MICC Pyro Cable Glands?

Hi Experts,
Does anyone know where I can get some 465 Cable Glands for mineral insulated cable? Cable diameter is 15/32 of an inch.
The cable was installed in 1959, is in good condition but needs some alteration. I have found 2 electricians who can do the work but have better things to do with their time than try to locate Imperial sized glands.
I have tried several UK companies and TPCwire in the USA but still no luck.
Many thanks in advance.

Need some help sourcing custom electrical enclosures.

Hi all,

I’m working on a new project and need some help sourcing custom electrical enclosures. The key requirement is that they must be IP66 rated – these are going to be installed in a pretty harsh environment, so dust and water protection is a must.

I’ve looked at a few off-the-shelf options, but I’m running into issues with getting the right dimensions and cutouts for cable entries, displays, and a few control buttons. Ideally, I’m looking for a supplier that can either customize...

First AVI.

Hello folks.
I'm a self funding trainee. Doing an course with EAL qualifications as a view to getting my foot in the door to becoming an electrician.
I've got my Inspection and testing practical exams coming up and would like to invest in an AVI and proving unit.
I need it to do phase rotation as I'm hopefully going to get taken on for my NVQ at my current workplace which does commercial.
I'd prefer to have a AVI that doesn't need batteries to show voltage(just seems safer)
Thirdly a...
