RCD mainswitch? What's the best way forward?

Hi all first time posting on here, my friend is currently living in a flat in South Wales, with an Independant main fuse as you can hopefully see.. It uses a 63a RCD as a main switch
6a lights and smokes
16a storage heater
X2 32a cooker and sockets

To introduce heating (no gas) he wants to just swap the 16 to 32 and make it ring, adding electric heaters(6/32/32/32). I've put him in touch with an electrician so no rush on replies, but just interested in learning more myself as I'll be...

New supply to granny annex

Hi, need more advise as getting two different views from electricians. Ty

Detached double garage 10m from house, split equally into garden room and garage on 32a supply from cu in house. Looking to convert into 30m2 granny annex with small kitchen (induction hob, single oven), shower room, heating, sockets, lighting etc. No gas so everything electric and as not much space prefer to avoid hot water tank / immersion heaters. So thinking electric underfloor heating, electric shower and...

Cable sizing

Hi all,

I am trying to calculate a SWA 4 core that will be protected by a 250 amp switched fuse isolator. It is going to supply a 3 phase electric boiler that pulls 209 amps each phase at most. I'm filling in the parameters to an online cable calculator ,when asked for the voltage i've put 400 v, when asked for load in amps i've put 250 amps. Is this correct or should i be putting the total amps 627 because thats the total 3 phase load?

EICR - Certificate, do I need to change my CU?

Hi All,

My first post - starting with a question and looking for your help/guidance.

I'm looking to rent out my house 4 bed mid-terraced and I am looking to have an EICR certification done.
Reading it seems I don't have to change the CU but the electrician says I will have to as I am going to be letting the place out.

This CU was installed in 2013 it's in the Kitchen within a wooden shelf cabinet. Pictures attached. Kindly share your thoughts. Many thanks...

Transfer Switch Grounding

I have Generac Homelink Upgradeable Manual Transfer Switch (Model: G0068521 Serial: 3009887938).

The neutral is switch and I believe when this happens it is a separately derived system.

The manual recommended the generator attached to the transfer switch needs to have its neutral bond to the generator frame and the generator needs to be attached to a grounding rod.

My question is why does a grounding rod need to be attached to the generator when the house the transfer switch is on is...

EICR Frequency

Asking for a friend who works in the health and safety sector, was asking me about the proper time intervals for EICRs in commercial and industrial settings.

I had a look in BS7671 and I see ( Reg 652.1 ) that it doesn't give specific timescales for various settings, only general guidance.

I found this video online (the veracity of which I cannot be sure) which seems to suggest 3 years for factories, and for some commericial premesis like offices, every 5 years.

Connect retic controller to Dol contactor

Hi, after some advice as my retired electrician father in law can’t figure it out.

We purchased a house with a bore, I have attached the current setup in a picture. The dol contractor is always on so we have to use the isolator switch to turn off and on (he said saomething about the isolator being broken as when turned off there is still one phase that is live on the pump. That’s the first issue.

How would I go about getting him to connect a retic controller to the bore pump. He said it’s...

Minor works but not a minor works?

When connecting a new boiler into an existing switch fused connection unit and you are not modifying or extending any of the fixed circuit wiring, do you carry out the full range of tests shown on the minor works cert, with reference to a NICEIC version?
Zs @ db
R1R2 of the circuit up to the switch fuse
I/R test of the circuit before connecting the boiler
I/R test of the circuit when the boiler has been connected at a lower test voltage 250
Or would you just do a zs @ boiler and RCD tests...

Zs too high

I have a Ze reading of 0.35 on a TNCS system and I've had the DNO out to check and they say its ok.

From my main board I have 2x 10mm sub mains feeding another board and my Zs on the cables is ~0.45 ohms. Max allowed according to BS7671 is 0.35 ohms. What can I do in this instance as the high Zs is caused by the high Ze which the DNO has okayed.

Thanks for the input.

Relevance of Table 41.3 where Additional Protection is present?

Reading of 411.3.2 and following suggests that compliance for disconnection <400ms may be obtained using either MCB or RCD. Where an RCD (RCBO in this case) is used for Additional Protection, is compliance with Zs specified in Table 41.3 still necessary?
The situation: new installation by A.N.Other in a timber shower/toilet block on a camping facility. Initially 8 no. hand dryers on a B20 wired in 2.5 T&E radial, 1.25mm flex drops from local FCU to each dryer. Repeated...

Do crimped connections in a choc box in an inaccesssible location comply with regulations?

The relevant regulations are I think as follows:

BS 7671 513.1: cable joints must be accessible except where allowed by 526.3

which is covered by ...

BS 7671 526.3 (iv) joints made by welding, soldering, brazing or compression (which covers crimped connections)

So far so good. But:

526.5 (iii) Every termination and joint shall be in an enclosure partially formed or completed with non-combustible material.

This I think does not cover a choc box which is as far as I can make out is made...

SY, CY None Compliant????

So, I'm out on site the other day and the apprentice is installing some SY cable for a ring final circuit. Anyway, we got chatting and he mentions that this type of cable does not comply with BS7671! I said, "of course it does, it's part of the AM2 and it is one of the 7 cable types of the new 2357 apprenticeship NVQ! So out of curiosity I had a look. To my suprise, it does state in the BS7671, that this type, along with YY, CY are none compliant!! I know that most of this multi-core cable...

BG Split load board 18th edition compliant?

6 Way Metal Dual Split Consumer Unit c/w 2 RCDs (Type A) c/w 6 MCBs | BG (CFUDP16606A-01)

BG are stating that these are 18th edition compliant. I'm doubtful if they meet regulations 536.4.3.2 & 536.4.202 - overload protection of switches and RCCBs.

the RCDs are rated at 63A. There is no way of configuring the supplied MCBs that doesn't exceed 63A.

I guess if the main fuse was 60A it might be compliant but then would there not be an issue with the potential load of the...

Distribution circuits in Section 705 location, RCD needed?

I just want to check how I should be interpreting section 705.

705.411.1 states required disconnection devices, the first two indents covering final circuits and sockets, requiring 30ma and 100ma RCD's depending on rating of socket.
Indent 3 says " all other circuits" need 300ma RCD.

Does that include distribution circuits, outside? Or is the word "final" implied?

The background - a fused down main supply circuit runs along the drive of an estate. About half way along...
