Can a HW cylinder be used as primary heat source for CH only? Discussion Thread

Can a HW cylinder be used as primary heat source for CH only? Discussion Thread

Hi, I would like to know if a HWC can be used as a primary heat source for a new central heating system. My idea is to heat the water in the cylinder in advance for space heating, then use a circulating pump to distribute around the home in radiators. The cylinder will contain radiator water though so unsure if this would be an issue?

The HW in the property is already on another cylinder. I know it seems...

Using an AAV for washing machine waste trap Discussion Thread

Hi
We have a small utility cupboard for a washing machine with a standard washing machine waste kit installed as shown. Excuse my poor draughtsmanship. For complicated reasons we need to raise the floor as shown but this means we obviously need to raise the washing machine waste trap.

The shaded area is how the team of builders that built the bathroom section, which is an extension on a beam and block floor, left things. I...

Tightening galvanised pipe and fittings Discussion Thread

Tightening galvanised pipe and fittings Discussion Thread

I have a threaded galvanised tube between 2 T-pieces. I can’t screw the t-pieces onto the tube - they’re already sealed to the spur. So the only way I can screw the pipe between them is to screw it all the way into one side then screw it halfway into the other (by unscrewing from the first end) . So neither is tight.

How do I seal this? I can see that I can use enough PTFE tape on the 2nd end but by un tightening the first end...

What is bebeath this "stopcock" hatch? Discussion Thread

What is bebeath this "stopcock" hatch? Discussion Thread

Just in front of my house is this iron cover with "stopcock" on it (see attached photo)

However, when I lift the lid and look inside there is apparently not a stopcock, but some sort of a vertical metal structure with a cable attached to it. Can anyone tell me what it is? The void was partially filled with sand, most of which I have scooped out. Is the sand supposed to be there, or did it just get washed in from the garden?

I...

Purpose of vent under sink? Discussion Thread

Purpose of vent under sink? Discussion Thread

There are bad smells that come from my sink drain when I run water.

On inspecting (undoing) the U-bend trap, there is no debris or anything in there. It is a clean run. And I don't think the water is being siphoned out of the U-bend (though I can't be certain) because the sink is used a lot and the smells occur when I run water, not when I leave it alone.

I was puzzled as to the purpose of the vent that points upward and to the left in...

Is there a flexible pipe suitable for a secondary hot water circulatory system? Discussion Thread

Is there a flexible pipe suitable for a secondary hot water circulatory system? Discussion Thread

I'd be grateful for some advice please.
I'm doing a stable conversion which requires a secondary circulatory system. The plumber (yes, he is qualified) initially didn't realise this and when questioned, didn't actually appear to know what a secondary system was! He did come back to install one though, but I've now discovered (just in time before the ceilings are boarded over), that the...

Underfloor heat pipe specification and pipe centres and radius bends. Discussion Thread

In my attempt to future proof my underfloor heating design to maximise the heat output at the lowest possible mean water temperature, I am planning pipe 16mm dia pipe centres at 133mm governed by the nature of the installation (3 pipes per space between floor supports at 400 mm ctrs. - Serpentine layout.
I would welcome any advice on the best possible pipe spec or brand for this approach so...

Obstructed pipe q can I Reposition toilet pipe Discussion Thread

Hi
I have a problem about waste pipe positioned over the front door
A bathroom was turned into a 3rd bedroom. The toilet and sink was moved to a storage room just behind the 3rd bedroom. The waste pipes were put under the floor. Everything works fine but the customer wants the waste pipe to be lifted above the decorative plaster .
I’ve been advised that is not possible as the waste needs to pass down to the soil pipe...

Pura shower head - too much weight for a tiny thread Discussion Thread

Hi there,

Hopefully someone will be able to help me…..

I have what I believe is a pura shower arm which has recent started leaking from the fitting which is really no wonder when you compare the weight of the shower arm (let alone the additional weight of the shower head) to the tiny female thread within the arm- please see photos.

I am looking to obviously stop the leak but when screwing the arm to the brass...
