Mystery catastrophic combi boiler leak Discussion Thread

Mystery catastrophic combi boiler leak Discussion Thread

Hello, The other week was below freezing weather, so I put the heating on my combi boiler.
The timer was set to come on 15min per hour overnight.

In the morning, I went into the kitchen to find the boiler was dead, about 3 to 5 litres of water on the floor beneath the boiler and the kitchen mains circuit was tripped.

Engineer came out and opened front cover and more water poured onto the floor (imagine a goldfish floating out...

Mitras semi buried gas meter box - welded meter outlet fitting Discussion Thread

Hello, I went to a job recently that had a smart meter in a mitras semi buried gas meter box. See pic attached. The meter outlet fitting is a factory made welded fitting that allows the meter outlet to line up with the outlet hole on the box. It is not something I had seen before and I was wondering how one would deal with these if you needed to upgrade the pipe run to 28mm as the fittings seem to be...

Viessman Vitodens 100-W weather compensation Discussion Thread

Good evening,

I have a Vitodens 100-W (Type B1HC, B1KC) boiler and I'm considering adding a weather compensation control.

I'd appreciate any insights on the pros & cons.

We spend around £1,200 a year on gas, Viessmann reckons you can save up to 15%, is this achievable?

Regards

What does this debris look like to you? Discussion Thread

What does this debris look like to you? Discussion Thread

We've recently done a power flush on a system that's already been power flushed twice within the last 5 years. System boiler with an unvented HW cylinder and 3x UFH manifolds. Quite a large house. Strainers installed before each manifold - fully clogged.

The stuff we got out of it looks like in the picture below. My guess - the green/yellow stuff is bacterial growth, but some of it feels like sand, which I can't explain.

What...

I have one vertical radiator in my bungalow and it does not heat up unless the surrounding radiators are shut off. I have tried turning the surrounding radiators down but the have to be completely or very nearly off for the vertical one to heat, leaving the surrounding areas cold

Any suggestions on house to address this issue?

blisters on flush valve seal Discussion Thread

blisters on flush valve seal Discussion Thread

Had a leaking flush valve in the cable operated Fluidmaster drop dual flush valve in the toilet cistern that initially turned out to be some limescale debris stuck between the flush valve (drop valve?) and its seat.....
After removing the unit and cleaning it all out I noticed what I can only describe as some quite large - about 3 to 8mm - "blisters" on both sides the Silicon sealing washer, I carefully pierced them with a fine needle...

POC in flue integrity Discussion Thread

POC in flue integrity Discussion Thread

Windy day, wind blowing directly at a fan assisted horizontal flue.

During a flue integrity test O2 is 19% 10ppm of CO

The very next day without the wind the flue integrity is fine.

This is the first time I've ever had this but I would guess its a common issue?

I wouldn't say the flue is particularly susceptible to wind as its opposite the prevailing but a plume management would actually cause more issues with keeping it away from the...

Issues with Kane 458s

Bought unit back end of April 2022.

1st. Problem sent back to Kane on 7th July. After flue sampling it would take 2 minutes to slowly drop coppm. Then hang at 4 coppm for next to 3 to 4 minute's before zeroing in fresh air. Also ratio would jump around.

Kane fitted a new CO sensor.

2nd. Problem sent back to kane on 6/12/2022. On older pre-condensing boilers I'm getting unbelievable clean ratios of.

Where's Leaky? Wetness, swelling and white streaks! Discussion Thread

Combination tank on a raised shelf in a 2 door cupboard. Top cupboard door is jammed shut as it has 'swelled up'. Some evidence of 'wetness' but hard to say where it is coming from but...the ceiling above the cupboard, outside of the cupboard, is showing wet patches. Is there a plumbing equivalent of fluorescent dye used in automotive?
I think it could be

Siting of over sink heaters? Discussion Thread

Siting of over sink heaters? Discussion Thread

Hi all
I’m fitting a couple of these handy heaters over 2 basins side by side but I’m wondering which side to site them?
It’s got to be over the basin due to the little blow off on them. I’m thinking if I put them to the left it avoids sitting over the cold taps but then I’ve gotta run pipework left and down under the basin? The hot tap hole is just blanked off.
Any advice please guys?

Washing Machine Waste Water flowing into the Dishwasher Discussion Thread

My dishwasher (on the left) and washing machine (on the right) are positioned next to one another – see pic A

After repeated washing machine cycles over time waste water from the washing machine builds up in the basin of the dishwasher - see pic B. The waste water will overflow onto the floor if I don’t run an empty dishwasher cycle which removes the excess waste water build up. This is how I get rid of the...

New ceramic tap gland is stiff Discussion Thread

Hi, fitted some new ceramic 1/4 turn tap glands as the hot one was leaking but the cold tap now feels stiff and jerky, the hot one is fine nice and smooth but the cold one isn’t, it’s fine when it’s out of the tap you can turn it easily but once fitted in the tap it goes back to feeling stiff, is it something to do with it being mains fed unlike the hot tap, any ideas.?

Vaillant ecoTEC 824 - simplest 30kW replacement? Discussion Thread

Hi.

Looking to replace a 13-year old 824 with a new combi as its location is being moved, so seem like a good time to also replace. The new boiler needs to be more powerful - 30kW (as against 24kW?) - as the mains supply will also be upgraded.

The old 824 has actually had its pipes shifted to the new location, so ideally looking for the most direct swap possible. Plumbers back on Tuesday, so looking for the easiest...

Any boiler fault finding apps? Discussion Thread

Hello all,

I have been on most boiler manufacture's fault finding type courses as well as generic ones. Does anyone know of any apps or such that help with diagnosing faults. Any that you can put in boiler make / model and "symptoms" and it helps with diagnosing the fault?

Priority domestic hot water PDHW Discussion Thread

Priority domestic hot water PDHW Discussion Thread

Hi everyone,

I have a customer who needs a new system boiler, currently has a 22kw which I've roughly calculated as enough heat output for the heating (its a 6 bed victorian terrace house), but this doesn't take the 200l unvented cylinder demand into account. Currently the system is setup on S plan, with no priority domestic hot water. When I fit the new boiler, I would like to try and set it up with PDHW for obvious reasons, but I'm...

WAVIN (Hep20) UFH Actuator - is newer model compatible? Discussion Thread

Hi.

Mil's UFH has Wavin 230V 2W actuators - model 1026. One went 'pop', and I've ordered a replacement, but the fellow that turned up is their newer model, the 35CS498, a one-watt jobbie in a straighter-sided body.

I've asked the seller - the Underfloor Heating Store - if they are fully compatible - straight swap - but thought I'd ask on here too, since they can seemingly take a few days to reply.

New combi choice - manufacturer with the 'best' controls? Discussion Thread

Hi all. Asking for a friend who is getting a new combi.

They'd short-listed the WB Greenstar 4000 and Vaillant ecoTec Plus 832, and asked for my thoughts. I didn't have any, other than to ask what controls they were planning to use with them, and that's when I opened a can of worms. The required info for this aspect of a new install surprised me, and I'm still left floundering, even tho' I've spent weeks...
