I know a while ago that there was an issue with regards to some members who fell into certain criteria (what year they registered for eg) that meant when we removed the Trusted Advisor tag and moved towards the Esteemed automated version, we may have not rewarded some of the incredibly brilliant plumbers who spent a fair bunch of hours on here between them all.

So I'd like to right that wrong.

Would one radiator in this space be enough for 6.5 x 3.8m room? Discussion Thread

Hi all!

So I've got a 6.5m x 3.8m front room, it's an extension incorporating half of the original living room. I've worked out the BTUs needed but my question is will one rad in this space be enough? Putting two in at half the BTUs each will be a awkward mission but I'm a little apprehensive about only have one in there! Will one be adequate in this type of space? There will also be a wood burner...

 

Boiler problem Discussion Thread

I have a condensing boiler in my kitchen and every time I pour waste water down the sink there’s a gurgling noise at the boiler. I do know that the overflow from the boiler runs into my soil pipe and I have checked both waste pipe work and outside soil pipe work at the manhole everything is clear! I would just like to know could this cause problems with my boiler in the future? Any advice appreciate

Dual fuel towel rail heating element Discussion Thread

The instructions with the new dual fuel towel rail we've had installed are in very bad English and, anyway, are pretty short!
Any chance of a couple of quick questions?
1. Do we have turn down the central heating control on the radiator when the electric element is on? Obviously, we wouldn't choose to run the central heating AND have the electric element on but mistakes can happen - is it dangerous?

Long right angled screwdriver Discussion Thread

Hello,
I want to tighten a screw at the back of a radiator. Instead of removing the radiator, I thought it would be better to use a ratchet screwdriver or a right angle screwdriver. However the screw is at 20 cm depth. I would appreciate any advice from you on the best tool to use to tighten the screw instead of removing the radiator as i can't find as long right angled screwdriver / ratchet screwdriver. Old cistern/syphon advice? Discussion Thread

Hi guys

I’ve tried to help out an old neighbour tonight with his toilet (low level cistern) as it had stopped flushing.

On inspection it was the diaphragm had split so I’d managed to get a new one, brilliant.

Problem is though, the existing syphon didn’t have a washer between the syphon and cistern??? Not even silicon or paste to be seen. 40 years this has been like it and I’ve never worked on a toilet without a washer. Plus, the flush...

Taps: quality tiers? Discussion Thread

Hello, I've tried searching using Bristan, Grohe, Vado etc & get no results at all - I don't understand that!
Anyway, is there an existing post, or would anyone be kind enough to proffer their opinion on tap quality. As I see it, there are two parameters - quality/thickness of chrome plating and quality of engineering/innards. I'd expect a decent brand to have both at a reasonable level.

I'm probably interested in middle-higher middle quality...

Got an existing combi with 3rd party controls.
There is a towel rail zone with 2 port valve and UFH manifold with 4 actuators and a 2 port valve.
They are having an extension with another UFH manifold with 3 actuators, would this need a 3rd 2 port or just use the same as the other UFH?

Having airlock problems with our hot tap: when is is running we hear bubbling and sometimes it stops completely. We can get it running again by running the cold tap fast at the same time. We are not on the mains. Our plumber used a wet and dry vacuum cleaner to pull water through once, is there a less expensive device I can use to get the air out? Thanks...

Noisy pipework Discussion Thread

We have a baxi combi boiler. Just lately on using hot tap either in kitchen or bathroom sink we sometimes get a pusating waterflow accompanied by a loud vibration seemingly in pipework or possibly boiler itself. Any thoughts? TIA.

Unvented hotwater cylinder Discussion Thread

Hi,

The invented hot water tank is dripping water continuously. I have tried to top up the air as suggested in YouTube videos by shutting off the hot water outlet and cold water inlet into the tank, opening the hot water tap to let the water out then opened the valve to air in. Have kept the value open for over an hour, however when I turn in the cold water in let and hot water outlet, water starts to drip.
Boiler is working fine, no issue...

Utility Room waste Discussion Thread

Afternoon.

Moving home and have a utility with a small wash basin at the right hand side, so I'm adding in a washing machine and dishwasher.

Would this be okay waste wise?
Don't really want to core a new hole to take the dishwasher w/machine waste seperate

So think of teeing it into the current basin waste I will attach an image, any better ideas ?

Milwaukee Press Jaws Imperial vs. Metric Discussion Thread

I’m moving from USA to the UK and with my tools is my Milwaukee ProPress gun. I am under the assumption that I will need to leave the 1/2” 3/4” and 1” jaws in USA and buy new 15, 22, 28 jaws in the UK unless someone here might know if the imperial jaws will press metric fittings too?

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone has done this and if so what insulation did you use? I have about 1 metre that needs to run up from patio height to just above the damp proof course. The wras approved pipes are quite big and costly and I have lots of rainwater pipe I could use.

Pushfit fitting/pipe ok to rub against one another? Discussion Thread

Hi

I've been swapping rads in my house and during one rad swap I used the original notches on the joist to run the new flow and return pipes. In one notch both the flow and return touch and might get pressed against each other when the chipboard goes back down.

Should I open up the notch or reroute the return (left valve pipe)? Or is it ok they touch together?

Hi, I have an old 3 story property with radiators on each floor. The radiators have become increasingly less efficient so feel flushing the system would have a hopeful benefit. I have bought a secondhand flushing unit (pictures attached) and would like some advice on how to set it up. Also, should I put some form of product in the system to break up the sludge before flushing. Any advice on setting up etc., would be much appreciated...

Hi,
The isolation valve feeding my toilet cistern was leaking. After considerable effort, I was able to lift up the cistern to put an O-ring washer around the top of the inner circle referred to with an arrow in the attached image. Unfortunately, when I let the water through, there was a burst leak. Should I use a flat-ring washer instead? If so how can I get the right size?Should I put the ring at the top or push it down?

I'm trying to locate a close coupled cistern seal (foam or rubber) for a 2" flush with a 100mm OD and 67mm ID. All I can find is 105mm, 107, or 110mm OD.

The pan recess for the seal will only accept 100mm OD.
