What plumbing tape is recommended for a copper waste water pipe Discussion Thread

Hi there,
We have a leaking waste water pipe which our washing machine, boiler and dishwasher feed into. We are working on getting a plumber in to fix but it is taking a while because access is awkward.
In the meantime, we're looking at using some tape to seal the leak but there are lots of different types (at different prices). Can anyone advise on what we should use?

I’ve never installed or maintained the water heater above but today I’ve isolated the cold into the heater but lived up the mains to it so that it could feed the other appliances.
I noticed that water was passing through the tundish. As id isolated the feed into the heater I ruled out the temp/prv on top of the unit being the issue. I checked the vessel which was flat and full of water, so I replaced it. Still water passing...

Hi,

I by chance discovered that amongst a bunch of copper pipes, I have a PEX pipe that runs through a void between the original house and extension. The image is from the back of a store cupboard where the pipes run up and then into the original house between floors.

I suspect this pipe has been in place for at least 12 years, if not more. We have lived here for 5. It was only when I looked up the void, I discovered this bend...

Boiler cycling Discussion Thread

Any ideas what could cause a boiler to repeatedly cycle on and off on both hot water and central heating. Until the boiler gets to temperature then settles down and stays on for both.

Tape for pipe insulation Discussion Thread

Does anyone have recommendations for tape to seal the seams in foam pipe insulation? Most tape seems to get brittle over time and lose its stickiness and lets go.

Also does anyone know of a foam pipe wrap? There are a lot of spots around pipe clamps, valves, pumps, etc. that cannot be covered. All I can find online is something that looks like bubblewrap with foil on both sides. It works great, but it is very flammable (found that out...

 

Higher than normal CO on new Grant Install Discussion Thread

Wondering if anyone can shed some light. Installed a grant 15-21 internal utility boiler on Wednesday. Has a lo nox burner so co2 needs to be 12.5%. Radiator tails weeping Discussion Thread

Hi all,

I fitted my first rad the other day and unfortunately both tails are weeping. Whilst holding the tail in my left hand I wrapped ptfe between 15 and 20 turns clockwise. I screwed them in with my radiator spanner as far as they would go, not quite up to the last thread though.

Im going to drain the system (its only a couple of rads) and try again. I guess the options are to try and screw them in a little further? Or Shall I start again...

Hi all, anyone know what could be causing this? Everytime I flush the toilet the (what I think is called) tundish makes a gurgling sound. I live in a flat and sometimes when the people upstairs flush too it can be heard. So I fitted a new induction hob today for my father and whilst the old hob was off I saw that the old gas pipe for an old gas hob that has been capped off with a solder fixing is touching the back of the oven housing. I pulled that oven out slightly and it is not pushing the pipe much, like 1mm, but just wanted to check if you think it's ok to be touching the back of the oven? I know the fittings I have are Wavin Osma Gold and have done a fair bit of research into them, I just wanted to confirm once I try and demount the fitting with bent circlip pliers and discard the Osma, as long as I keep the original insert on the lower plastic main part.

That I will be ok to use Hep2o or JG speed fit etc?

I had an engineer today added inhibitor in the boiler filter via Magnaclean when he did the boiler service after taking off the filter.

But before the engineers all added inhibitor in the radiators, and I searched online that majority information shows the inhibitor should be added in radiator.
So is it ok or right to add inhibitor in the boiler filter via Magnaclean?

If putting this in a system would it at all help clean a plate heat exchanger if repeatedly turning the hot tap on so the C/H water runs through the plate? I imagine not or everyone would so it instead of taking the plate out.

I have a wall mounted thermostat which is connected to a 26 volt supply from my Glowworm 24ci boiler.
I would like to replace this thermostat with a programmer so i can time when the heating comes on and off.
Currently the heating is turned on/off using the thermostat.
Can the thermostat be replaced with a programmer that works off this 26 volt supply or is a mains supply required.

Issues With Nest Generation 3 Operating Boiler? Discussion Thread

I have a Google Nest Generation 3 Thermostat/Heatlink, Thermostat is in the hallway and operates non hard wired, Heatlink is upstairs in the airing cupboard. There is also a Mains Link fitted for the boiler over run.

Radiator valves question Discussion Thread

Hi guys, got supplied some corner valves but they have a rubber to go into the radiator inlet to create a seal.

Well I imagine that's the idea, fit hundreds of valves but always used Ptfe or Loctite. Never actually seen one like this.

Will the rubber do the job, or should I remove and fit as normal with Loctite?
