How To Balance Radiators

Tool List:

Radiator-bleeding key
Lockshield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner
Screwdriver
Digital thermometer or multimeter with thermometer function

1. Make sure all the radiators have been bled. Turn off the central heating and allow the radiators to cool.

2. Familiarise yourself with the valves. The lockshield will usually have a push-on cap or one that is secured with a screw through...

Do I need to bother with traps at all?? Discussion Thread

Do I need to bother with traps at all?? Discussion Thread

I'm building a new off-grid house. I have a septic tank exclusively for WC's, but the bathroom has its own independent stone & gravel soak away which is straight into the ground and not connected to the septic, and obviously not connected to any main drains etc. Therefore, no sewer gases etc. Which makes me think - in this specific case do the bathroom fittings (sink, shower, and bath) even need traps??

Do I need to bother...

Looking for a cradle (Ideal Standard)!! Discussion Thread

Hi All,

I'm desperately looking for a cradle (the assembly that connects the flush unit to the cistern, in case I'm using the wrong terminology) for a discontinued Ideal Standard 2 button pneumatic system (Part number: SV93467). I really can't find it anywhere.

Can anyone recommend where I could get hold of one, or even have one available for purchase?

Thanks in advance

Seeping pipe connection to Loft Cold water Discussion Thread

Had a problem with hammering noise coming from pipes (triggered by hot water, though it could be eased if you put the cold water on).
Went through everything i could, checking joists etc. Problem appeared to be the ballcock in the loft cold water tank.

Ive replaced it but for the life of me i cant stop seepage out of the nut for the main connection. Though ive only tried
1. Going tighter, getting to the point i'm not...

Water hammer/noise from pipework at night? Discussion Thread

I attended a Job where the customers complained about noisy pipes more often late at night bur sometimes in the day. While I was there, there was no issue but the combi boiler was set to preheat and they said they usually put the washing machine on late at night.

With their permission I turned off preheat to the boiler and added a mini shock arrestor on the cold feed to the boiler near to where they were hearing the...

need a new shower but my hot/cold pipes are reversed! Discussion Thread

Hi All
I need some advice as to a replacement power shower and there are a few problems
I have posted a photo showing the old unit ( a ShowerForce 2000 ); it has supply pipes which run down from the roof and into the left side of the unit as shown

The big problem is that the hot and cold are reversed ie the hot is on the right and cold on the left
I have heard that it is possible to get a reversed cartridge? that...

Found a plumbing course but not what I expected? Discussion Thread

Hi all,

I posted a question back in 2020 so rather than bringing that thread back up thought I'd start a new one. I've been in a few jobs since I was made redundant back in 2020 but still in IT. I am still thinking my calling is in a trade and Plumbing seems to be the one I'm drawn to the most, I've managed to gain a little more DIY skills as in putting up more curtain poles in bedrooms, fitting a new basin in the...

Indirect (Boiler Fed) Megaflo Doesn't Stop Heating Discussion Thread

Hi,

I noticed yesterday that when my HW is on, that the boiler runs constantly... I even tested this morning after it ran last night so no water usage overnight and it ran for 30 minutes before I turned it off on the controls. No dripping from Tundish.

My suspicion is the thermostat in the Megaflo which presumably is demanding heat continually. The boiler temp is 60c so it isn't going to overboil the water the...

Name That Training "Provider" Scam - Share to help the cause Discussion Thread

We haven't had many of those training provider scammers posted about on the forums. They must still be knocking around. We're now not hosted on a .co.uk or in the UK and our head office isn't in the UK either.

So BRING IT ON! Gimme them names let me blog about them all!

Please add as much detail as you can to this thread and I'll help add a bit more and then I'll move it to a thread of its own, using...

Breakdown of costs to become "oil" qualified & OFTEC registered Discussion Thread

Hi all,

Please can you advise on the above, estimates of costs would be fine.

I realise it depends on my competency / skill set & experience to a degree. I've no "oil" experience to speak off apart from a couple of boiler installs back in the 1980's! I'm classified as Category 2 in the "prerequisites for OFTEC assessments"

List of costs:
1. Specialist tools & equipment (recommendations of brands...

Fixing the upright of a shower enclosure

Is there anyway of getting a good fixing, where the upright of the shower enclosure meets the continuous edge of large vertical porcelain tiles? I'm concerned about the possible cracking of tiles with holes drilled so near to the edge, and also the possibility of leakage. Laying the tiles horizontally is going to be so bitty. I'm quite prepared to make a payment for anyone who...

Hello a regular member

Loving your Forum for ages, but lately with all the ads I’m not a regular visitor.
I’ve actually got an “ad block” on my devices, & need it on.
Obviously I know all the reasoning behind the ads needed to keep this great site working.
Love to get back to viewing like I use to, & hoping I can maybe soon😎

I'm tidying up the forums a bit Discussion Thread

It's been a while since I've stepped back and took a look at the forums which are being used etc.

The Plumbers Arms and Gas forums are all now public, but you won't be able to post in them without meeting the usual criteria.

Private Forums detract posting from the normal forums which Google 'crawls' and then indexes. The more threads we have out of the eyes of Google the less chance we have of new members coming aboard.

I've made...
