Help Needed: Fixing My Damaged Tub with Devcon Metal Patch & Fill Discussion Thread

Hey everyone,

I have a pretty messed up tub that I need to fix, and I'm hoping to get some advice on how to do it. I've attached pictures of the damage and the Devcon Metal Patch & Fill (Charcoal Gray) that I plan to use for the repair.

Has anyone used this product before? If so, could you guide me through the process or share any tips for the best results? Any advice on surface preparation...

Tree roots near oil tanks Discussion Thread

Tree roots near oil tanks Discussion Thread

I have a large oil tank spaced 1m from the garden fence. It sits on a concrete slab that extends about 0.5m from the tank on all sides. The top of the tank protrudes over the top of the fence, so my neighbour decided to cover the sight of the tank by planting five leylandii trees about 2ft from the fence, so trunk of trees will be just under about 2m from the tank and just over 1m from the edge of the concrete slab

I don't know how deep the...

Cold water flowing back into hot feed. Discussion Thread

Cold water flowing back into hot feed. Discussion Thread

Hi, I'd be grateful for some advice please. Every 12- 18 months I have a problem with cold water flowing back into the hot water feed through a shower mixer cartridge, causing all hot water feeds to run tepid or cold. Replacing the mixer cartridge fixes the problem, but only for a while.

Would a better solution be to have a water pressure regulator installed to reduce the pressure of the mains cold water? Are there any negative...

SVP (grey water) gases leaking out - What do you see (pics)? Discussion Thread

Hi all,

I would really appreciate your eyes on these pictures - What do you see ?
Does anything look strange about the Rockwool insulation to you?

I suspect that my long ongoing rotting veg/sewage smell is caused by a fault in this connection that has been hidden from previous inspections behind a layer of clean yellow Rockwool (see pic).

The connection is in a very awkward place to get to, behind...

Replace a water tap Discussion Thread

Replace a water tap Discussion Thread

Hello,
I have to replace the kitchen's water tap. I am attaching images (*.img) of the under sink existing pipe connections where some welding and corrosion seem in place. The water tap my wife has already bought has different hose pipes, see please attached housepipe image. Any advice on how to place the new water tap with all the under sink pipes connection? Thank you

Shower mixer knob won’t reattach Discussion Thread

Shower mixer knob won’t reattach Discussion Thread

I bought this shower mixer unit from Victoria Plumb some years ago, & one of the handles has come off & I cannot manage to re-fit it to the mixer unit arm (see photos).

It was in place for a long time but somehow came off recently but no matter how much pressure I apply to try to push it back on, it won’t stick. I don’t want to push it any harder as I fear I’ll damage the (Mermaid) panels behind it. I am
presuming (perhaps...

External manhole odour Discussion Thread

External manhole odour Discussion Thread

I have a square cast iron manhole cover in my garden that does not block the smell of toilets. It measures 655 x655 millimetres with a gap of between 5 and 6 millimetres all around between base and cover. The waterboard claim there is nothing they can do!! Is there anything I can use to make it airtight but also to be able to open it for inspection or repair? Apparently, the manufacturer of EVERBUILD THERMOFOAM AIRTIGHT ACOUSTIC EXPANDING FOAM...

Integrated dishwasher Discussion Thread

Hello,

I’ve just bought my first home so am learning along the way! I’d like to get a slimeline integrated dishwasher placed in place of the cupboard pictured (I’ve found one that should fit!). I can’t find a freestanding dishwasher that’s less than 600mm deep and I need 550mm.

It’s next to the sink, and the washing machine is the other side of the sink with one cupboard in between (in the left of the picture). But at the moment there’s no...

Have my water pipes been plumbed the wrong way? Discussion Thread

Have my water pipes been plumbed the wrong way? Discussion Thread

Good morning,

I recently had an extension, new bathroom and new en-suite fitted. Prior to the works the hot water worked.

Now we have moved back we have no hot water. British gas came for 5 hours on saturday and replaced every single part of the boiler to do with the hot water as well as the heat pump. After not knowing what else it could be, the engineer was able to manually ‘trick the boiler’ and turn the hot water...

Replace central heating gate valve with 2-port valve Discussion Thread

Replace central heating gate valve with 2-port valve Discussion Thread

My house has a separate central heating loop that heats an annex. The annex loop has 3 x radiators (all with TRV), pump (manually switched) and a gate valve. The gate valve is very awkwardly sited, and difficult to operate, so I am wondering whether it is a good idea to replace this with 2-port zoning valve that is controlled by the pump switch. So pump off = port vv shut, and pump on = port vv open.

Any thoughts...

Waste pipes into hopper Discussion Thread

Waste pipes into hopper Discussion Thread

Hi,

My property's soil stack has a single entry for the toilet waste. Then a separate hopper and downpipe which drains into a gulley to collect waste water from the basin, shower and bath. Photo attached for reference.

I'm in the process of lowering the waste pipes and wondered whether I could combine the pipes going into the hopper so that only one pipe comes out the wall. Could I tee into the bath waste pipe (50mm) with the shower (40mm)...

Central heating system cleaning Discussion Thread

Central heating system cleaning Discussion Thread

Hi all, I have added a bottle of Fernox F3 into my towel radiator upstairs, I have run the heating for a good few days now.
I have bleed off points downstairs I can attach a hosepipe to drain the system.
Question when all the water has drained out can I leave the hosepipe on and fill the system so the water flows through the system and remove any left over crap out of the hosepipe, and then when I see water running clear remove...

Connecting bath drainage to soil pipe Discussion Thread

Connecting bath drainage to soil pipe Discussion Thread

Hi all,

I need to connect my bath drainage to my new soil pipe. I have only one spare entry to boss into the pipe at the very bottom (see photo). As the inital entry out the wall will be on a gradient I was wondering if there was a combination of elbows I can utilise to get a 90 degree vertical drop down to the entry point? As I'm using 50mm pipe I'm not sure I can fashion something on an angle, similar to boiler condensate pipe...

Help unclogging an old cement sink Discussion Thread

Help unclogging an old cement sink Discussion Thread

Hi all,

I have an old school cement laundry sink which is clogged. I unscrewed the pipe underneath to try to clear it, and I was able to get some crud out of there. But it seems the majority of the blockage is higher up, in a section concealed within the cement where the two drains get combined into one. I've tried to see if the strainers can be removed with needle nose pliers, but they seem stuck fast. We've tried drain cleaning...
