a quick way of getting battons on the wall

If I know there is no pipes or wires behind in the wall I will then use a few nails, but if I can't be sure for whatever reason then I have used hot glue gun.

never used battens myself, always do the same as dave, battens are too slow

Got to batten when laying HEAVY tiles. My preference ,with lighter tiles,is to set the datum line at a height that will allow me to lay a course the full perimeter of the room(no battens). Can then tile down to the floor and then, as the datum row should have set ,can tile the top areas.

if you are starting off and battens give you that bit of reassurance, then would rubi batten stands be a better alternative to glue guns etc??

Those rubi batten stands can be a bit of a maul. A pile of tiles to hold up any droopy battens can help a dream.

It all depends on the weight of tile, wether you'd want to use bats.

hit tysfoot,its all done to experience friend, one day you will stop using battons because you will have a better understanding of tile adheshive, you will be more confident but it takes time

Start your first lower tiles and pin them up with masonary nails, after using an electrical gauge to source out the wires, copper pipes etc................

The right way start is to batten out...sorry guys but,I'm here to offer advice to new starters not pro's...go with battens and when you dont need them anymore,you have learned your trade well. It took me 4 yrs tiling (without help of any kind) to lose the batten.I'ts all about methods.Tile adhesive application,and choices of adhesive ,given time your action of applying adhesive will be good enough...until then go with what you are happy with,after all a batten will not do any harm....Gaz

Did my first batten-less wall yesterday....yipee.

Was only 150x150x5 white tiles and used White Star for the first time (good stuff, lovely to apply) and slapped tiles on to datum checked with a level and hey presto, no slippage.
