Mr Tiler

so ive taken up majority of the tiles today and started chipping away the adhesive... some of the ply was coming up with the adhesive and I have noticed that there seems to be a thin layer of ply over other ply... I cant get my head around it as you can see there are square pieces of wood over the joists but these lines were not visible until I chipped away this thin layer of ply which was no more than 3mm thick and seemed to be completely glued to the underfloor but why would there be joints im confused and my knowledge has hit its limit on this lol.

Not sure why you are bothering. Either remove the tiles and the ply is in good enough shape to SLC over, or it isn't and you rip the ply up and replace. Chipping away adhesive and damaging the ply and in the process undermining it is not an option.

I havnt chipped away much of the ply just a small section shown in the pic and tiles have been down previously for 6 yrs and no cracks or cracked joints so will be fine... but If I was to replace the ply is it possible without removing the bath? this is why I don't fancy the idea of replacing the ply. cheers

Considering the ply doesn't even go under the bath, then yes it is possible to replace the ply without removing the bath

yes mate that's the plan... instead of slc I will glue and screw boards in level. I did read on here you can get some sort of 4mm cement board whats this called? cheers

Just cut along the bath line with a sharp stanley blade mate if its only thin ply?...i can see a piece of wood you can run against...it should be quite easy to remove.....its always easier to just remove and replace the ply mate. i have never found ply good enough to tile onto after i have removed tiles....they wont have stuck before if its in good condition...

nah its not thin mate there seemed to be a really thin layer on top as when it was coming up with the adhesive I noticed theres joints underneath the thin stuff but I cant explain it its like someone glued thin ply on top of the original ply that was down as its not nailed or pinned its just stuck fully to the underfloor.

sorry if you don't get what im sayin I cant explain it propperly

as above, it sounds like your just pulling the top layer of ply off.......to do the job right you need to replace the ply...
alrite chaps yeh I know ply is basically layers stuck to one another but once the top layer came away there is joints in the wood and these joints were not visible before the top layer came off. now im getting worried as I wnt to get it done and am thinkin myself that I need to change the ply but havnt got the money to get a plumber in to remove my bath for me

You need the rite tools for the job!!I would cut along that battern with an exact saw or Fein and get rid of that ply !but make sure you know the thickness of the ply and check for pipes??do it once do it rite

thats the case exactly mate... lack of knowledge of tools! I knew there would be some sort of tool out there to do that thats why I asked in a previous post cheers andy

joists under the ply?...must be 18mm?...hard to see from picture. let us no how you get on mate!
hello martino yeh mate ply straight over joists.... I pulled one piece up and it is roughly 18mm id say mate. today ive got the rest of tiles up, glued and screwed some 6mm ply at 200mm centres to add a little more strength as didn't want to rip out the bathroom to change the ply (don't go mad at me its my own house remember lol) if I had the money I would of done this but its just not possible atm as im a dole dosser lol. but floor seems sound now so tmoz will be off to tile choice for some hardi and away I go. but floor seems to be fine to tile onto not much movement at all really. cheers

your rite mate I don't know much about the timber floor side of tiling. i think to understand ripping up a floor and replacing I would actually need to do it under pro supervision its not something ive been able to find good enough description of on here. but floor seemed sound to fix hardi onto already just added the ply for a little extra strength as ive read here that hardi adds no strength to a substrate what so ever. im just being honest mate im not goin to say ive ripped it up and replaced it when I would deffinately struggle with this task I wrekkon it would end in tears as im skint atm..... when ive got money comin in the lots being ripped out.

just started buffing off the tiles and there is still a residue from the grout I cant seem to get off.... do these tiles require sealing or something I havt had this issue before and they never said anything in the shop about seling them. cheers
