am i right in thinking that he,s a proper for suggesting it..i know the weight issue comes into it,,,but it smacks of a cowboy mentality..what if the client see,s me doing it...basically on my last 4 jobs..ive refused to do it..and stuck to my guns!..hes a tight ..oh he,s gonna love me,ive just ordered a marcrist ck850 180mm blade..lol....also and its slightly related..but its my understanding that if your a subby...you supply your tools van etc...now he employs myself..paye...what responsibiltys does he/generally any boss have towards his/there employees/me?

if it's paye most companies will provide you with specialist tools and perishable(spacers etc) but you are the tradesman and should have all your own general tools
for a tiler this would be
-trowels
-scribes
-cutters(dry/wet)
-files
-nippers

blah blah! you get the drift,i do know a joiner who's boss gets him anything he needs but it is quite uncommon and he does however basically run all his jobs for him:thumbsup:

you can still claim expenses back on tools even though you re paye by the way
i'e tools, clothing and such that you use or work

oh! and your boss i a pillock, why don't you send him to the forum to do a little research or is he one of these know it alls that will tell everyone else they are wrong?
what he is doing is not only cost-cutting but dangerous,as you stated the weight issue is just the beginning, will it take a court case when somone gets injured from a falling tile or a a floor tile coming lose due to the previous job being unsatisfacory and someone tripping/slipping.you can be the greatest tiler in the world but can't account for the previous guys work.tbh i just wouldn't do it and would walk,i know we all need to earn a living but when it comes to blame time i'm sure he won't stand back and say it was all his fault,he will put you in itup toy our neck and as the tiler it is your responsibility to leave a safe job:mad2:

Good points david!...ive felt like walking for a few months now...the tile situtation is but 1 of the problems i have with this guy...the other thing im interested which you stated is,how would i go about claiming for tools etc,,whilst im paye?...i know there are glitches and loop holes...i had a m8 at my last job tell me and everyone you could claim for washing powder due to the fact that you have to wash a supplied uniform..,,funny thing is,he was right and pretty much everyone jumped that band-wagon...And MERLE..thanks for your input also...yes,i have all my own tools..raimondi trowels:smilewinkgrin:...love em...all the neccessarys.not sure if thats 1 "C"..im multi skilled, carpentry first trade/plumbing, plastering, tiling..i pretty much do alot and to a high standard..im getting to really love tiling...so im covered for tools...but this guy recents and sometimes doesnt bother buying me blades etc...i asked him to purchase a good decent tile cutter(dry)..because of all the larger format porcelian tiles i was getting on each job..he came up with a rubi star 50 i think is its length...its no where near capable..last rant i shall mention about my boss as i can feel my blood boil..He priced up a job for a client and spent the evening trying to talk her out of having her dream porcelain tiles...basically he bs her into getting ceramic due to the fact(which he obviously omitted to mention to her)that he wont invest in a decent cutter...i think i can wrap this post up...me thinks me is gonna be walking soon...or im going to end up in police custody..:thumbsup: thx for help...p.s david ! if u could tell me how i claim...that would be appreciated...cheers

phone your locl tax office and explain you are paye but wish to claim expenses ,ie tools and such, they will send you the correct forms out,but you will need receipts for everything such as tools, clothes, petrol you can also claim lunches and other stuff

You,d think so!...i worked for luminus group for 8yrs..made redundant last july...gained employement again, coulson group in cambridge..they ended up laying me off 4 months later with 12 other guys that had been there 6yrs each...things are come and go,and i know id find a job...but its always that time between jobs...round my way...employers are nervous of hiring, and often its patchy...but thats cool...we have to adapt.

Im giving it a few more weeks yet..start getting some interviews or may even start up myself
