Wonder why anyone would want to demean the life of one of the world's most heroic men. Just to sit on top of a rocket and be fired into space is enough for me to be a believer.

Hear hear. Especially considering the technology of the day. I'm a believer.

Its a tricky one, i genuinely don't know either way whether we did or not.
The US and Russia both were in the middle of Cold War games and were doing anything to get one each other, apart from war.
So either they did fly the 238854 (average) miles to the moon, orbit, leave one vessel, land another vessel, transmit TV signals, relaunch, dock and then fly back with a computer now more powerful than a mobile phone.
So either they did do it,to say ha! Or they lied and still said ha!. And lets face it, neither of these super powers have been exactly honest to anyone when it comes to Cold War diplomacy.
I dunno, but he did seem a really good bloke so RIP anyway!
