Depending on the type of paper would determine if I would advise you doing it yourself or not and how.

They are many different types... Vinyl, woven, non-woven, fabric, fabric backed, fleece backed... these are the most common but require different prep, different methods of hanging and different types of paste. Think of it like Ceramic, Porc, mable, slate....

There are also many different types of printing which can affect how you hang it, some you can't get a single drop of paste on, some you can wipe clean, some even require you to wear gloves as moisture from your hands can damage them. OK it's unlikely you'll pick one of them but the point is wallpaper is not just a wallpaper in the same way tiles are not just tiles.

If you were doing a top pro job you would prime the walls with a dedicated wallpaper primer such as Zinsser Gardz, then you'd line the walls. Line walls is not just to give you a smooth surface to paper on to it also has many other benefits, some papers you can get away without a liner, others you'll have problems if you don't

When I choose a paper Rob, I'll let you know what it is, chances are it'll be a mid range one so hopefully not too complicated!!!

No problem.

To be honest price of paper is not always an indication of quality. It can be a bit of pot luck. places like B&Q, homebase... have some shocking papers they also have some excellant papers all in the same price range, then you have named design houses who also have some shockers and diamonds but are are 5 times the price. Not all brands make their own papers, many go on buying trips to Asia to select papers for their collections. Those papers can end up in B&Q or in an exclusive boutique somewhere.

My advice would be to not think about price too much but just pick something you like

As always, thanks for the advice folks. I'll let you know how I get on, or be back for a few more questions! It won't be getting done 'til the end of May, so plenty of time to choose the paper.

One last thing.

Measure from skirting boards to ceiling, find out the pattern repeat then add this to your measurement for worse case. This will determine how many drops you will get from a standard euro bolt (10.05m) In most cases this would be either 3 or 4 drops.

It is very important that you check batch numbers as shading can be a real problem

In fact the more I think about it tiling and papering is not too different when it comes to the rules
