i went into topps tiles the other day to open a trade account after being informed a few days earlier what to take in to open it. when i spoke to the manager of the store he informed me that Topps have stopped opening trade accounts because there are enough tilers.

i just think he couldnt be bothered to open a trade account for me.

has anyone else had trouble with them recently ........

You could have tiled an entire wall in the time it took you to type that Cornish......

Interesting post though.

Gr8 post cornish,
The DIY ( Destroy It Yourself ) market was in a decline up until the recent C Crunch panic....it has and will continue to escalate again I'm afraid.....Gaz

The DIYers will be fobbed of because they are told by sales asistants thats what you need, The sales guys really don't know themselves, Almost the blind leading the blind

...and all the sales assistants do is read the packet.

An ex colleague of mine works for B&Q.

He said that B&Q want people who know about retail in their business. They don't give a hoot about product or trade knowledge for most of their key people.

It's nice to see that this forum is sponsered by people and suppliers who actually care about what they ut out into the marketplace.

This is where the advantages of having the likes of Wetdecs to supply us are. He has selected a handful of decent products and recommends given products for given situations. This deals with the 'need' for a manufacturer to try to sell his own product to anyone, regardless of suitability.

No I couldn't, I'd still be wondering how to level it out and whether I should prime it or not.......

Be serious

That should be good news to us then.

Goodbye to scheduled work, hello to DIY emergencies

In my experience it depends on what brand of stores you use, the big general DIY places, B&Q, Wickes etc, have very little product specific training. Tile focused brands like Topps, Tile Giant, CTD and independant shops have specific targeted training. I find in these stores that the staff are much more helpful and knowledgable. Obviously they aren't tilers, they don't know everything but they have good knowledge of the actual products they are selling. I'm not saying they are perfect and know everything. I know some of the big suppliers such as BAL, Mapei etc have reps that visit the stores regularly especially when new products come out and train the staff on these products. From reading a fair few posts on here I'm sure Gaztech can elaborate more on this kind of thing. The last time I used Tile Giant there was a rep in from one of their suppliers talking the staff through some new products. You don't see this down in B&Q.

i went into topps recently to buy tiles for my own kitchen and told him i was setting up my own business and wanted to open an account he said when i had, bring in a business card and i could open one and it would only take a couple of minutes. he even gave me some discount for the tiles etc that i bought.

This is an old thread mate and Topps have relaxed their rules on opening accounts now. Pretty easy to get one now:thumbsup:
