The problem here is that people are looking anywhere. We need to differentiate ourselves from other chancers.

If Fred had gone to the job armed with a photograph album of his previous work then he may have god the job on the basis that it was obvious that he knows what he is doing.

However, customers seem to choose tilers rather like brands of butter in the supermarket - they go for the cheapest.
The problem here is it could be anybodies work your showing the customer so this way isn't exactly full proof for the customer you could be the worst tiler in the world but have a fantastic portfolio, their still relying on your sales pitch if you can talk the talk and weather they like you or not and lastly the price you give

Got a call tonight to see a lady not happy with the partner's mates tiling.

2.5m2 splash-back and 4.5m2 floor. As soon as I got there she was on my case with what adhesives, how long it should take etc. The bloke in question was apparently an all-rounder DIY-er.

Day one, he only put up under 1 m2 100x100 black ceramic tiles on walls not fit to even paint on, left a gap in the corner 10mm!!!

Day two, he started the floor, 300x300 porcelain with wall adhesive!!!!

I gave her a blinding quote, £150 for the walls & £215 for the floor.

Got a call this evening saying they found some one cheaper.........:yikes:
sounds like Groundhog Day Fred, I for one think you underquoted:incazzato:

My mates dad is a roofer, a busy one. He charges £20 or £30 to come and have a look at your roof and give you a quote if locally. He says he is sick and tired of people getting him out and then finding someone cheaper or just using his quote for one of their insurance quotes. This money is knocked off his final invoice total if he does the job.
Luckily he his busy because of his reputation.
Don't think this would work with tiling.

Let them get on with it Fred.
Does anyone think that people sometimes look at the tiling trade as being less skilled than others?
:incazzato:
Not so much less skilled but they just don't know whats involved, they see nices tiles in the shop and think it'll just cost £50 more for the adhesives and fitting. What's primer, what's slc etc. you get my drift.

Iv'e found the same with people with damaged baths etc, I'm seriosly thinking of charging for insurance quotes.

What makes me laugh is that the bloke got that Unibond all in one adhesive and striaght onto concert unibond from some DIY shop. As I said to them, look at the price for these materials, then look at the price for the top gear materials I will suppy, their cheaper.

You are all correct, it will cost them more in the long run.

She stood on the floor tiles he had done and all the adhesive was pouring through the grout joints, I said, in a kitchen where you have to work? and it takes 48 hours to go off and my gear will be set in 2 hours!!!!

Had another quote today, same area, sorry if I upset folks, but very run down council, 10m2 ceramic in kitchen floor, quoted £320 inc. of materials, they looked at me as if I just landed from Mars. Thats including ripping up old floor covering!!!

thats a lot of money to people who DONT have it Fred but thats not your problem, some people just dont understand the concept of preparation and using the correct materials and the cost of materials and labour. Some are just completely mad...i once had a guy asking me to put the vinyl floor tiles onto his bathroom walls....lmao.:yikes:

Reading this and other similar threads makes me realise how lucky I am. Haven't had to reduce my prices so far; one job I priced recently was 6m2 kitchen wall tiling, 23 m2 kitchen/utility floor tiling with underfloor heating. Client supplying tiles and underfloor heating, I'm supplying latex, adhesive, grout and electrician. Priced it at £2650 and start a week Mon.
