thanks mosaic girl for your input. i do agree that this sounds like a complicated job but with 3 weeks left until Christmas, i think i'm going to struggle to find a pro who can come in and tile my floor before the holidays.

but if anybody knows of a pro tiler in the stoke on trent area that can come in and tile my kitchen floor within the next 3 weeks, then please get in touch!:cheers2:

If you need a tiler then we shall get you one....just got too ask...

The description could just be a vinyl tile which been taken up and the adhesive would remain, Then laminate laid over the top, I would lay using a spf if she is not sure lay one tile with the addy and see what happens after a couple of days and see how difficult it is to lift the tile. If the tile pulls the black stuff from the floor then it would all need removing.

but does it sound hollow? wondering if Barratts(?) forgot to put a dpm in, and compromised with a bitumen one, surely not(?)

That's amazing Doug, I was thinking exactly the same, but didn't dare say it, knowing of the horror stories of the barratts estate down the road....we natural lateral thinkers/reseachers think alike

Whitebeam's two day test seems a good idea, but if GRR is anything like me the patience bit will be tough, I like big projects, ripping walls down and large scale things, less good with detailed preparation, but that's bad self-talk, so: I'm getting better at preparation all the time...

Do you need help with putting up a new thread "tiler wanted" GRR? Dave (God's assistant) will do it for you, just ask him here or in a private message, by clicking on oh his name, you get to his profile, under contact info you see the option - unless you have already done so , forgot to check

Doug, according to Barratt's regional office in the Midlands, they stopped using bitumen coverings, and confirmed that it certainly would not have been used in a property built only 5 years ago. So, being the nosey so-and-so that I am, I've just been and dug my land registry stuff out about the house.

Looking back, I can see that the house was repossed (Jan 08, we purchased it May 08, knowing that it would need some work, and got it for 10k under asking price), the previous owner by the looks of it had rented it from new, but digging further back, it looks like Barratts originally sold the house to a local construction company before selling it on to the owner who had it repossessed!

So that's got me thinking that maybe Barratts sold it to the local company before completing the build, and hence me now having to contend with building materials that haven't been used in the industry for a long while.

I'm going to see if the local construction company is still in existence and see whether they were responsible for laying the bitumen covering.

And when I can figure out how to get photo's from my camera phone to download to my pc, I'll upload some pics of this black bitumen stuff for all to see..... :joker:

yep, it's nearly as thick as the bitumen in my kitchen!

I guess it's time for me to shut up about my kitchen floor and what adhesives to use..

Thanks to everybody who has been involved in this thread. I'm glad I was able to talk to lots of different people with experience and views that they were happy to share with me. It's greatly appreciated.

And the reason why I'm on here at 6.15 on a Saturday night is because my husband is upstairs wrestling with laminate floor in the bathroom. All I can hear are swear words, hammering, sawing and tools being thrown around so I decided I'm better off downstairs
