thanks to everybody who freely gave their advice and opinions about my kitchen floor project. it's turned out really well. i also must thank my hubby for doing most of the hard work because i didn't even get a chance to fix more than 2 tiles!

Don't worry Dave, hubby and I are already considering what tiling needs doing next. the en-suite shower is probably in desperate need as we know for a fact that the walls weren't tanked before being tiled over. the dried out leak patches in the lounge beneath are testament to that! might get a professional in to do all that tho.....:smash:

Congradulations on doing a good job!

This may not be relevant anymore but, after looking at your pictures I think that the black coating on your floor may be a Surface damp proof membrane. This is a chemical which can sometime be a two part resin mix. It may have been used by the builder or owner of the property if they were planing to lay a wooden floor or if there had been problem with damp if there was some kind of failure in the screed. I have not seen a blck sdpm before but then again I havent seen everything on the market.

If it was a dpm then what I would have done is prime and skim with a self levelling screed.
