what a transformation since taking those old tiles off. You're nearly there :20: Just sand back that mist coat, prime the walls and then away you go with the tiling :hurray:

What do you mean "prime the walls"? Do you mean buy a tin of primer? I thought that's what putting the mist coat on was supposed to do? Ho hum!

I'm a bit concerned as well about that sink area. As you can see, there's still cement based adhesive on the walls that was under the bottom layer of tiles. I'm worried about buggering up the building up of that to get it level all the way up. Also, that ledge above the sink has a chunks chewed away on the corner triangular vertical splashback bit, so I've somehow got to rectify that as well.

I'd definitely get rid of the mist coat if you can. Have you done a tape test on it? I know your decorator friend said a mist coat would work fine instead of primer, but acrylic primers are designed to take tile adhesive over them. Watered down emulsion paint isn't designed to have anything other than more emulsion put on over the top.

You want to give the adhesive the best possible chance to adhere to the walls and if there is a coat of watered down emulsion in the way, you're not going to be giving it the best chance. As soon as you put adhesive on top of the emulsion, the water in the adhesive will soak the emulsion and then you'll have to wait for the emulsion and the adhesive to dry, hoping that no tiles fall off in the process.

Looking at the ledge above the sink, I'm wondering whether you'll be able to get away with building that up with tile adhesive as you go. What do the pro's think? Would tile adhesive be ok to fill in the small areas to make them straight and square again?

Ok, naturally it's wise to listen to the professionals? What type of primer do I want? I have a Tile Magic a couple of doors away, but I don't think I've seen any primer there, maybe I just didn't notice.

I'd rather ask here than in Tile Magic. I asked Tile Magic about sealant for between UPVC windows and walls and bathroom sealant and he said I could use the silicon sealant on both. My friend told me silicon sealant for bath areas and an acrylic one for the windows.

Is that me making you grrrrr?

Oh. Can you see this? Am I allowed to post pictures or just links?

Ask the people that work there what acrylic primers they stock Minnie.

I have used BAL's Primer myself in the past, but there are others on the market. Mapei will do one, and I should imagine a lot of other adhesive manufacturers would do their own primer too.

Tell the shop staff what you're trying to do, and get them to recommend something for you. If you buy what they recommend, and it's not right, you can always take it back for a refund.
