the pics are fine Minnie, no probs with you posting them:thumbsup:You want to be getting an acrylic primer, don't let them fob you off with PVA

Oh, I've read about the nastiness that is PVA from you lot so I was determined not to get that.

However, I forgot to ask. Better go and check to see what I ended up with.

hm, can't see. It's "Mapei Primer G - synthetic resin-based primer in water dispersion with very low emission of volatile organic compounds, for cementitious adhesives and smoothing compounds on pourous, non-porous and gypsum-based substrates"

PS: I know all you professional tilers advocate mixing your own adhesive but I figured for a novice (and it was suggested by Tile Magic) that I use the ready-mix stuff, so I've got a blue tub of the Mapei adhesive. Will that work with this Primer G?

decorators telling us how to tile now

Well you know how it is, see a female secretary and decide she knows sod all about decorating or tiling (which I obviously don't). I told them I was going to sand the walls and put primer on. They asked why. I said because I'd been told to by professional tilers. One of them said, "but that makes the walls smooth and you need a bit of roughness for the adhesive to stick".Which reminds me, nobody has told me whether I've got the right primer or not?

Ask the people that work there what acrylic primers they stock Minnie.

I have used BAL's Primer myself in the past, but there are others on the market. Mapei will do one, and I should imagine a lot of other adhesive manufacturers would do their own primer too.

Tell the shop staff what you're trying to do, and get them to recommend something for you. If you buy what they recommend, and it's not right, you can always take it back for a refund.

Sorry, I had obviously already gone to the shop by the time you answered and got what I mentioned in Post No. 31. Don't know if synthetic resin-based primer is the same as acrylic?

sorry Minnie, advice on here is voluntary, we do have lives outside the forum! i.e personally I meant to get back to you, but my 3 and 4 year old boys had to have their tea  anyway, dispersion adhesive doesn'y need primer g, they flogged you a white elephant, just make sure that all the loose emulsion is off, and tile away:smilewinkgrin:

Let the boys eat cake and explain to them that you have important voluntary tiling advice that needs to be given! Dispersion adhesive???I no longer need the primer?? erm, who told me I did? Anyway, I'm wondering if I do need it for the bit of plywood that's in front of the bath - or not?

do your guys at the shed know what they're talking about, probably not, maybe point them to TF and get them educated before they give out more stupid and unecessary advice:ban:

Minnie, sorry, my boys come first, they are my priority, I'll moderate future posts in this thread, but will not advise anymore, I hope you get satisfaction from TF:dizzy2:nb we didn't realise that you'd be using a dispersion adhesive eeekkk!!

Oh no doug - I was only joking about your boys! You just don't know my sense of humour well enough. You've made me feel bd now. There's a lack of smileys on this forum to convey this though (or rather, they don't seem to be working for me at the moment). It was suggested that the ready-mix stuff would be easier for me to use especially as I have arm and shoulder problems.I'm only 5ft tall so didn't fancy carrying 20kg up four flights of stairs. Obviously I could have carried 2 x 10kg bags but that would have meant another trip and probably more money. I was going to go for a cement based adhesive as I was going to use 33x25cm tiles, but I was hoping as I'm using smaller tiles, the ready-mix stuff would do.
